Vehicle: 2017 Acura ILX Premium

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2017 Acura ILX Premium. All of a sudden, the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) light, ABS light, and the electric power steering warning light all came on simultaneously on my dashboard. There's also a message about checking the VSA system.

The car still drives, but the steering feels a bit heavier than usual, and I'm worried about driving it with these safety systems potentially disabled. I tried turning the car off and on, but the lights just come back on.

I don't have an advanced scanner, but my basic one isn't showing any engine codes. Could this be a wheel speed sensor, or something more complex with the ABS module? Any advice on what might be causing all these lights to come on together?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When multiple warning lights like VSA, ABS, and Power Steering illuminate simultaneously on your 2017 Acura ILX, it often points to a shared underlying issue or a problem with a central control module that communicates with all these systems. While your basic OBD-II scanner might not show engine codes, these systems often generate specific chassis or body codes that require a more advanced scanner.

Common Causes for Multiple Warning Lights:

  • Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: A faulty wheel speed sensor (WSS) is a very common culprit. The ABS, VSA, and even the power steering system rely on accurate wheel speed data. If one sensor fails, it can disable all these systems.
  • ABS Module/VSA Modulator Failure: The ABS control module (which often integrates VSA) can fail. This is a more serious and costly repair.
  • Low Battery Voltage/Charging System Issue: While less common to trigger these specific lights without other symptoms, a significantly weak battery or charging system problem can cause various electronic systems to malfunction.
  • Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch can sometimes cause VSA and ABS issues, as these systems need to know when the brakes are applied.
  • Wiring Harness Damage: Damage to the wiring harness connecting these sensors or modules can interrupt communication.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Visual Inspection of Wheel Speed Sensors: Look at each wheel for any obvious damage to the sensor or its wiring. Sometimes road debris can damage them.
  2. Check Brake Fluid Level: Ensure your brake fluid reservoir is at the correct level.
  3. Battery Check: While less likely the primary cause, ensure your battery is healthy and terminals are clean and tight.

When to See a Shop:

Because these are critical safety systems, it's highly recommended to have your 2017 ILX diagnosed by an Acura dealership or a reputable shop with advanced diagnostic capabilities. They can:

  • Scan for Chassis Codes: Use a professional scanner to read specific ABS, VSA, and power steering system codes (C-codes or B-codes) that your basic scanner cannot access.
  • Perform Live Data Analysis: Monitor wheel speed sensor readings in real-time to identify which sensor might be faulty.
  • Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Thoroughly check the wiring harnesses and connectors for corrosion or damage.
  • Test ABS/VSA Modulator: If all other components check out, they can test the functionality of the ABS/VSA modulator.

Do not delay addressing this issue, as the VSA and ABS systems are crucial for vehicle stability and braking safety.
