How to run a mechanic shop

Publish guides, define your expertise, grow followers, and sell merch where enabled.

Who can open a shop?

Mechanics, educators, and creators 18+ with a ClearTheCode account. You must comply with our Terms and content standards. Shop content may be reviewed before it appears publicly where moderation is enabled.

Create your shop

  1. Sign in and open Open a shop.
  2. Choose a display name, URL slug, country, and short bio.
  3. Set expertise filters — makes, models, and systems (engine, electrical, etc.) so customers find you in search.
  4. Submit — your shop page is live at /shops/your-slug.

Expertise & filters

From your shop page (owner view), open Shop expertise & filters anytime to update checkboxes: all vehicles vs specific makes/models, all issues vs selected systems. This metadata helps directory search and sets expectations for followers.

Publish guides

Use creator tools on your shop dashboard to publish guides linked to your shop. Followers can receive email when you post (daily digest on our email schedule). Keep titles accurate and cite sources where possible.

Merchandise & payouts

List products with a price and shipping per item (or mark as digital for no shipping). Connect payouts via Stripe (W-8/W-9). The 15% platform fee comes from your merchandise subtotal — buyers do not see it at checkout.

When an order is paid, add a carrier (USPS, UPS, FedEx, or DHL) and tracking number. We check tracking daily; when it shows delivered, the buyer has 48 hours to dispute. After that, your payout releases automatically — you do not press “confirm delivered.”

Use Edit payout account in shop tools to update bank details in Stripe or open the Stripe dashboard.

Team & moderators

Invite admins or editors from shop tools (where enabled). Only owners and admins can change expertise, products, and broadcasts.
