Vehicle: 2017 Acura ILX Base

Hello everyone,

My air conditioning in my 2017 Acura ILX Base model just isn't blowing cold air anymore. It was working fine last summer, but now it's just ambient temperature air coming out, even when I have the AC set to the lowest temperature and fan on high. The fan works, and I can hear the compressor kick on sometimes, but it's just not cooling.

I live in a hot climate, so this is a real problem. Has anyone experienced this with their ILX? What could be causing this, and is it an expensive fix?

An AC system that isn't blowing cold air in your 2017 Acura ILX can stem from several common issues. Here’s how to approach the problem:

  1. Low Refrigerant (Freon):

    • Cause: This is the most common reason for a lack of cold air. Refrigerant can slowly leak out over time from seals, hoses, or components.
    • Action: A simple recharge might temporarily fix it, but if there's a leak, the cold air will eventually diminish again. A professional can add a dye to the system to find the leak.
  2. Faulty AC Compressor:

    • Cause: If you hear a click when you turn on the AC but no cold air, the compressor might be engaging but not effectively compressing the refrigerant. The compressor clutch might also be failing.
    • Action: Listen for the compressor clutch to engage. If it's not engaging or making unusual noises, it could be failing.
  3. Condenser Blockage or Damage:

    • Cause: The condenser, located at the front of the car, can get clogged with debris (leaves, bugs) or damaged by road hazards, preventing heat dissipation.
    • Action: Visually inspect the condenser for any obvious blockages or damage.
  4. Blend Door Actuator Failure:

    • Cause: The blend door controls the mix of hot and cold air. If it's stuck on the 'hot' side, you'll only get warm air.
    • Action: This often produces a clicking or whirring noise from behind the dashboard when changing temperature settings.
  5. Electrical Issues:

    • Cause: Blown fuses, faulty relays, or wiring problems can prevent the AC system from operating correctly.

When to See a Shop: While you can visually inspect the condenser and listen for the compressor, diagnosing refrigerant levels, leaks, or internal component failures requires specialized tools and expertise. It's best to take your ILX to a qualified automotive AC technician. They can perform a proper diagnostic, including pressure tests and leak detection, to accurately identify the problem and provide the correct repair.
