Vehicle: 2021 Acura ILX Technology

Hi everyone,

My Check Engine Light just came on in my 2021 Acura ILX Technology package. I used an OBD-II scanner and it's showing a P0420 code: 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)'. My car only has about 35,000 miles on it, which seems a bit early for a catalytic converter issue.

I haven't noticed any major performance issues or strange smells yet, but the light is definitely on. What could be causing this P0420 code on a relatively new car? Is there anything I can check myself before taking it to the dealership?

The P0420 code ('Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)') on your 2021 Acura ILX Technology package indicates that your vehicle's catalytic converter, or components related to its function, are not performing optimally. While often associated with a failing catalytic converter, it's important to consider other potential causes, especially on a lower-mileage vehicle:

  1. Exhaust Leaks:

    • Cause: Leaks in the exhaust system before or between the oxygen sensors can cause incorrect readings, making the ECU think the catalytic converter isn't working.
    • Action: Listen for hissing or puffing sounds from the exhaust. Visually inspect the exhaust pipes and manifold for cracks or holes.
  2. Faulty Oxygen Sensors (O2 Sensors):

    • Cause: The P0420 code relies on readings from two O2 sensors: one before the catalytic converter (upstream) and one after (downstream). If either sensor is faulty, it can send incorrect data.
    • Action: While the code specifically points to catalyst efficiency, a failing downstream O2 sensor is a common cause of this code without the catalytic converter actually being bad.
  3. Engine Misfires or Rich/Lean Condition:

    • Cause: Persistent engine misfires, running too rich (too much fuel) or too lean (too little fuel), can damage the catalytic converter over time or cause it to operate inefficiently.
    • Action: Check for other pending or active trouble codes that might indicate engine performance issues (e.g., misfire codes like P030X, fuel trim codes like P0171/P0172).
  4. Catalytic Converter Failure:

    • Cause: Although less common at 35,000 miles, a catalytic converter can fail due to manufacturing defects, prolonged exposure to unburnt fuel, or oil contamination.
    • Action: Symptoms might include a rotten egg smell from the exhaust, reduced engine power, or excessive heat from the converter.

When to See a Shop: While you can check for obvious exhaust leaks, diagnosing O2 sensor function or the health of the catalytic converter requires specialized diagnostic equipment (like a scan tool capable of live data monitoring). Given your car's relatively low mileage, it's advisable to take your ILX to an Acura dealership or a trusted independent mechanic. They can accurately diagnose the root cause of the P0420 code and determine if it's a sensor, an exhaust leak, or if the catalytic converter genuinely needs replacement, which might be covered under emissions warranty.
