Flickering Headlights on 2017 ILX - Electrical Gremlin?

Vehicle: 2017 Acura ILX Premium

My 2017 Acura ILX Premium has started having its headlights flicker intermittently, especially the passenger side. Sometimes it's just a quick flash, other times it seems to dim for a second or two before returning to full brightness. It's not constant, but it's noticeable and a bit concerning, especially at night.

I've checked the bulbs, and they look fine, no obvious signs of burning out. Could this be a wiring issue, a faulty ballast (if it's HID), or something with the headlight control module? Any ideas on where to start looking?

Flickering headlights on your 2017 Acura ILX can indeed be an electrical gremlin, and it's a safety concern, especially at night. Here are the most common culprits and how to approach diagnosing them:

  1. Bulb Issue: Even if the bulb 'looks fine,' an internal filament can be loose or failing. If your ILX uses HID (High-Intensity Discharge) bulbs, they can flicker as they age or if they're cheap aftermarket replacements. Try swapping the passenger side bulb with the driver's side (if accessible and identical) to see if the problem moves.
  2. Faulty Ballast (for HID systems): If your ILX Premium has HID headlights, each bulb requires a ballast to regulate power. A failing ballast is a very common cause of flickering, dimming, or intermittent operation. This is a strong suspect if only one side is affected.
  3. Loose or Corroded Wiring/Connection: Check the electrical connector at the back of the headlight bulb and the ballast (if applicable). Wiggle the wires gently while the light is on to see if it affects the flickering. Corrosion can also cause poor contact.
  4. Grounding Issue: A poor ground connection for the headlight circuit can lead to intermittent power delivery and flickering.
  5. Headlight Control Module (HCM): Modern vehicles often have a dedicated module that controls headlight functions. A fault within this module could cause erratic behavior. This is less common than bulb/ballast/wiring issues but possible.
  6. Alternator/Voltage Regulator: While less likely to affect only one headlight, general vehicle voltage fluctuations can sometimes cause lighting issues. However, this would typically affect other electrical components too.

When to See a Shop: If swapping bulbs doesn't resolve the issue, or if you suspect a ballast, wiring harness, or control module problem, it's best to consult a professional. Electrical diagnostics can be tricky. An Acura dealership or a reputable auto electrical specialist can:

  • Accurately test the ballast and wiring.
  • Check for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the lighting system.
  • Ensure proper voltage and ground connections.
  • Replace faulty components safely and correctly.
