Vehicle: 2019 Acura ILX Standard

Hey guys,

I've noticed a new, rather annoying clunking noise coming from the front end of my 2019 Acura ILX, especially when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It sounds like a dull thud or clunk, and it's definitely more prominent on the driver's side, but sometimes I hear it from both sides.

The car has about 60,000 miles on it now. I'm worried it might be something serious with the suspension. Has anyone else experienced this with their ILX around this mileage? What parts should I be looking at?

A clunking noise from the front end of your 2019 Acura ILX, especially over bumps, is a classic sign of worn suspension components. Given your car's mileage, this is a common occurrence. Here are the most likely culprits:

  1. Sway Bar End Links:

    • Cause: These small links connect the sway bar to the control arm. Their ball joints or bushings can wear out, causing a distinct clunking noise, especially when one side of the suspension moves independently of the other (like over a single bump).
    • Action: This is one of the most common and relatively inexpensive fixes for front-end clunks.
  2. Worn Bushings (Control Arm, Subframe):

    • Cause: Rubber bushings in the control arms or subframe can degrade over time, leading to play and metal-on-metal contact, which manifests as a clunk.
    • Action: A mechanic can inspect these for cracks, tears, or excessive play.
  3. Struts/Shock Absorbers:

    • Cause: While usually associated with a bouncy ride, worn struts can sometimes produce clunking noises if their internal components are failing or if the top mounts (strut bearings) are worn out.
    • Action: Look for fluid leaks from the struts or excessive bounce when pushing down on the corner of the car.
  4. Ball Joints:

    • Cause: The lower ball joints connect the steering knuckle to the lower control arm. If worn, they can cause clunking, especially when turning or going over bumps.
    • Action: Worn ball joints are a safety concern as they can fail completely.

When to See a Shop: It's highly recommended to have your ILX inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. Suspension issues can affect handling, braking, and overall safety. A professional can lift the car, inspect all components for wear, and pinpoint the exact source of the noise. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent more expensive repairs down the line.
