Vehicle: 2023 Acura Integra A-Spec

Hi everyone,

I'm having some trouble with the air conditioning in my 2023 Acura Integra A-Spec. For the past week or so, it's been blowing warm air, especially when I'm sitting in traffic or driving at lower speeds. When I'm on the highway, it gets a little cooler, but it's still not as cold as it used to be. It's really uncomfortable with the summer heat starting up!

To make matters worse, there's also a noticeable musty, almost mildew-like smell coming from the vents when the AC is on. It's pretty unpleasant and makes me think something might be growing in there. I've checked the cabin air filter, and it looks relatively clean.

Has anyone experienced these AC issues with their newer Integra? What could be causing the warm air and that terrible smell? I'm hoping it's not a major repair.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Refrigerant Level: The most common reason for warm AC is low refrigerant (Freon). This could be due to a slow leak in the AC system. A professional can check the pressure and recharge the system, also looking for leaks.
  2. Condenser Blockage: The AC condenser, located at the front of the car, can get clogged with debris (leaves, bugs, dirt) reducing its ability to dissipate heat. Visually inspect it for blockages.
  3. Cabin Air Filter: While you checked it, ensure it's truly clean and installed correctly. A severely clogged filter can restrict airflow, though it usually doesn't cause warm air directly but can worsen the musty smell.
  4. Drainage System: The musty smell often indicates mildew or bacteria growth in the evaporator core, which is inside the dashboard. This happens when the AC drain tube gets clogged, preventing condensation from draining properly. Water then sits and stagnates.
  5. AC Compressor/Clutch: If the compressor isn't engaging, or its clutch is failing, the system won't cool. Listen for the compressor engaging (a distinct click) when the AC is turned on.

Common Causes:

  • Low refrigerant due to a leak.
  • Clogged AC drain tube leading to mildew/bacterial growth.
  • Dirty or blocked condenser.
  • Failing AC compressor or clutch.
  • Faulty pressure switch or temperature sensor.

When to See a Shop: Given both the warm air and the musty smell, it's best to have your 2023 Acura Integra A-Spec inspected by an automotive AC specialist or your Acura dealership. They can accurately diagnose refrigerant leaks, clear clogged drain lines, and perform an evaporator cleaning service to eliminate the odor. Ignoring these issues can lead to more extensive and costly repairs down the line, especially if a small leak becomes a larger one or the compressor is overstressed.
