Vehicle: 2017 Acura MDX Advance

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with the Blind Spot Information (BSI) system in my 2017 Acura MDX Advance. The BSI warning light on the dash (the orange triangle with an exclamation mark) comes on intermittently, and sometimes the system just stops working altogether. The indicators in the side mirrors don't light up when a car is in my blind spot.

It seems to happen more frequently in bad weather, but it's not exclusive to it. I've tried cleaning the rear bumper where the sensors are located, but that hasn't helped. Has anyone else had this problem with their 2017 MDX or similar Acura models? What could be causing this BSI malfunction?

Safety is a big concern, so I want to get this fixed soon.

The Blind Spot Information (BSI) system in your 2017 Acura MDX relies on radar sensors located in the rear bumper to detect vehicles. When the system malfunctions, it can be due to several reasons, often related to sensor obstruction, damage, or electrical issues.

Steps to Diagnose:

  1. Inspect Sensors: Visually inspect the radar sensors, typically located behind the rear bumper fascia on each side. Look for any physical damage, dirt, mud, or ice buildup that might be obstructing them. Even a minor bump can misalign a sensor.
  2. Check for DTCs: A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will almost certainly be stored in the BSI control unit when the warning light is on. Common codes might include B1800 (BSI System Malfunction), B1801 (Right BSI Sensor Malfunction), or B1802 (Left BSI Sensor Malfunction).
  3. Wiring Inspection: Check the wiring harness leading to the BSI sensors for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. This is particularly relevant if the issue is intermittent or weather-dependent.

Causes:

  • Obstructed Sensors: Dirt, snow, ice, or even a sticker on the bumper can block the radar signal.
  • Damaged/Misaligned Sensors: Even a minor impact can damage or knock a sensor out of calibration.
  • Faulty Wiring/Connectors: Corrosion or damage to the wiring harness connecting the sensors to the BSI control unit.
  • Faulty BSI Sensor: The sensor itself may have failed internally.
  • Faulty BSI Control Unit: Less common, but the control unit that processes the sensor data could be malfunctioning.

When to See a Shop: Since BSI is a safety-critical system, if cleaning the sensors doesn't resolve the issue, you should take your 2017 Acura MDX to an Acura dealership or a reputable shop specializing in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). They have the necessary diagnostic equipment to read specific BSI system codes, test sensor functionality, and perform recalibration if a sensor has been replaced or realigned. Proper calibration is crucial for the system to function accurately.
