Vehicle: 2018 Acura MDX Base

Hey fellow MDX owners,

I'm having a problem with the power liftgate on my 2018 Acura MDX (base model). It's become really inconsistent. Sometimes it opens fine, other times it only opens halfway and stops, or it won't open at all.

When it does open, it occasionally struggles to close, beeping continuously before I have to manually push it down. I've checked for obstructions, but there's nothing in the way. It's getting pretty frustrating, especially when my hands are full.

Has anyone experienced this with their MDX? Is there a common fix or something I should check before heading to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Issues with power liftgates are quite common across various vehicle models, including the 2018 Acura MDX. The intermittent nature suggests it might not be a complete motor failure but rather a sensor, alignment, or electrical problem.

  1. Check for Obstructions (Again): Even if you've checked, sometimes very small debris, a misaligned cargo mat, or even a loose item in the trunk can trigger the anti-pinch sensors. Double-check the entire path of the liftgate and the latch mechanism.
  2. Reset the System: Sometimes, simply disconnecting the car battery for 15-30 minutes can reset various electronic modules, including the liftgate control unit, and clear temporary glitches. Reconnect and test.
  3. Lubricate Hinges/Struts: Over time, the hinges and gas struts can become stiff. Applying a silicone-based lubricant to the hinges and the piston rods of the struts (if accessible) can sometimes improve operation, especially if the liftgate sounds strained.
  4. Inspect Liftgate Struts: The power liftgate uses motorized struts. If one or both are failing, they might not have enough force to open or close the gate smoothly. Visually inspect them for any signs of damage or leaks.
  5. Check for DTCs: While a Check Engine Light is unlikely, a body control module (BCM) or liftgate control module might store specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to sensor failures or motor issues. A dealership scan tool can retrieve these.

When to See a Shop: If the problem persists after these basic checks, it's best to take your MDX to an Acura dealership or a qualified independent shop. They can perform a more in-depth diagnosis, which may involve checking the liftgate motor, control module, wiring harness, and anti-pinch sensors. A faulty sensor or a weakening liftgate motor is a common cause for these symptoms, and professional diagnosis will be required to pinpoint the exact component at fault.
