2020 MDX A-Spec: SH-AWD Differential Fluid Change Interval?

Vehicle: 2020 Acura MDX A-Spec

Hello fellow Acura owners!

I have a 2020 Acura MDX A-Spec with about 40,000 miles on it. I've been pretty good about following the maintenance minder for oil changes and tire rotations, but I'm starting to wonder about the SH-AWD differential fluid. I haven't seen any codes or lights, but I know this is a critical component for the MDX's handling.

The maintenance minder hasn't prompted me for the differential fluid yet. What's the recommended interval for changing the front and rear SH-AWD differential fluid on these models? Is it based purely on mileage or also on driving conditions?

Also, is there a specific type of fluid I should be looking for, and is this a job that most people can do themselves with basic tools? Any tips or warnings would be greatly appreciated before I dive into this!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

For your 2020 Acura MDX A-Spec, maintaining the Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) differential fluid is crucial for its performance and longevity. The SH-AWD system relies on precise fluid properties to operate correctly.

Maintenance Interval:

  • Maintenance Minder: The Acura Maintenance Minder system will typically prompt you for the rear differential fluid change with a '3' code. This is usually around 15,000 miles for the first change, and then every 30,000 miles thereafter, or based on driving conditions (e.g., frequent towing, mountainous driving, or aggressive driving may shorten the interval).
  • Front Differential: The front differential fluid (which is separate from the transmission fluid in your MDX) is typically changed less frequently, often around 60,000 miles or when the Maintenance Minder indicates a '4' code for transfer case fluid.

Fluid Type:

  • Rear Differential: You must use genuine Acura DPSF-II (Dual Pump System Fluid II) for the rear differential. Using any other fluid can cause serious damage and affect the SH-AWD system's operation.
  • Front Differential (Transfer Case): For the front differential/transfer case, use genuine Acura Hypoid Gear Oil HGO-1.

DIY vs. Professional Service: Changing both front and rear differential fluids is a relatively straightforward DIY task for someone with basic mechanical skills and tools. However, there are a few considerations:

Steps for DIY:

  1. Gather Supplies: You'll need the correct fluids (DPSF-II for rear, HGO-1 for front), a fluid pump, drain pan, and appropriate wrenches/sockets.
  2. Access: Lift the vehicle safely on jack stands or a lift to access the drain and fill plugs for both differentials.
  3. Drain and Fill: For each differential, remove the fill plug first (to ensure you can refill it later), then remove the drain plug to let the old fluid out. Once drained, reinstall the drain plug and fill with the new fluid until it starts to overflow from the fill hole. Reinstall the fill plug.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you're uncomfortable working under the vehicle or don't have the necessary tools.
  • If you accidentally use the wrong fluid type (stop immediately and consult a professional).
  • If you notice any leaks around the differential housings after the service.

It's always best to follow the Maintenance Minder's prompts, but proactively checking these fluids around the recommended intervals is good practice, especially if you drive in demanding conditions.
