Vehicle: 2020 Acura MDX Advance

Hello everyone,

I'm having persistent issues with the infotainment system in my 2020 Acura MDX Advance. The screen frequently freezes, becoming unresponsive to touch, and Apple CarPlay constantly disconnects, sometimes multiple times during a single drive.

I've tried restarting the system by holding down the power button, and I've also tried different USB cables for CarPlay, but the problems keep coming back. It's really frustrating, especially on longer trips.

Has anyone with a 2020 MDX experienced similar problems? Are there any known fixes or TSBs for these infotainment glitches? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Infotainment system freezing and Apple CarPlay disconnects are common complaints for the 2020 Acura MDX and other Acura models of that generation. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and solutions:

  1. Software Updates: The most frequent culprit is outdated infotainment software. Acura regularly releases updates to improve stability, fix bugs, and enhance connectivity. Your dealership can check for and install the latest software version for your MDX.
  2. Hard Reset: While you've tried restarting, a more thorough hard reset can sometimes clear temporary glitches. This usually involves holding down the audio power button for an extended period (10-15 seconds) until the system fully reboots.
  3. Apple CarPlay Specifics:
    • Cables: While you've tried different cables, ensure they are high-quality, MFi-certified (Made for iPhone) USB cables. Cheap or damaged cables are a leading cause of connectivity issues.
    • Phone Software: Ensure your iPhone's iOS is up to date.
    • Phone Settings: Check your phone's CarPlay settings to ensure it's not restricted or experiencing other issues.
  4. Causes:
    • Software Bugs: Inherent flaws in the infotainment system's operating software.
    • Hardware Malfunction: Less common, but a faulty head unit or USB port could be the cause.
    • Interference: Sometimes, other devices or even poor cellular signal can interfere with CarPlay.
  5. When to See a Shop:
    • If software updates don't help: If the issues persist after ensuring all software (vehicle and phone) is updated, and you've tried multiple quality cables, it's time for a dealership visit.
    • Persistent Freezing: If the screen freezes frequently and requires constant reboots, it might indicate a deeper hardware or software problem that requires professional diagnosis. They can check for specific TSBs related to infotainment system stability or potential hardware replacements.
