Vehicle: 2021 Acura MDX Technology

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a frustrating issue with my 2021 Acura MDX Technology Package. Lately, I've been getting intermittent 'LKAS Malfunction' and 'ACC Malfunction' warnings on my dashboard. When these warnings appear, both the Lane Keeping Assist System and Adaptive Cruise Control become unavailable.

It seems to happen randomly, sometimes on clear days, sometimes after a car wash. The warnings usually clear after I restart the car, but they always come back. I've checked the front camera area and radar sensor for obstructions, but everything seems clear.

Has anyone else with a 2021+ MDX encountered this? What was the cause or solution?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent warnings for Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) like LKAS and ACC are not uncommon, especially with modern vehicles like your 2021 Acura MDX. These systems rely on complex sensors and cameras that can be sensitive to various factors.

  1. Sensor/Camera Obstruction: Even if you've checked, sometimes subtle dirt, frost, or even a bug can temporarily obscure the front radar sensor (located behind the Acura emblem) or the windshield-mounted camera (behind the rearview mirror). Ensure these areas are spotless.
  2. Alignment Issues: A slight misalignment of the radar unit or front camera, possibly due to a minor bump or even manufacturing tolerance, can cause these systems to malfunction. This often requires professional recalibration.
  3. Battery Voltage: Low battery voltage, even if the car starts, can sometimes cause various electronic systems to throw errors. Ensure your 12V battery is in good health and fully charged.
  4. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): These warnings are almost certainly accompanied by stored diagnostic codes. Common codes might include C1810 (LKAS Camera Malfunction), P258B (Adaptive Cruise Control Sensor Performance), or other related communication errors. A professional scan tool can retrieve these codes and provide more specific direction.

When to See a Shop: Since the issue is recurring and affects safety-critical systems, it's highly recommended to take your MDX to an Acura dealership. They have the specialized diagnostic equipment to read specific ADAS codes, check sensor calibration, and perform necessary software updates. It's possible a sensor needs recalibration, replacement, or there's a wiring harness issue. Do not ignore these warnings, as they indicate a potential failure in systems designed to enhance your safety.
