Vehicle: 2022 Acura MDX Technology Package

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2022 Acura MDX Technology Package. This morning, while driving to work, both the ABS warning light and the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) warning light illuminated on my dashboard. There wasn't any noticeable change in driving feel, but it's definitely concerning to see those lights on.

I tried turning the car off and on again, but the lights came back on immediately. I'm thinking it might be a wheel speed sensor, as I've heard that's a common cause for these lights to come on together. I haven't had any recent work done on the car that would explain this.

Has anyone with a 2022 MDX experienced this specific combination of warning lights? What was the diagnostic code, and what was the fix? Any advice on what I should check before taking it to the dealer?

Hello Chris,

Seeing both the ABS and VSA warning lights illuminate on your 2022 Acura MDX is a clear indication that there's an issue within the vehicle's braking and stability control systems. You're right to suspect a wheel speed sensor, as it's a very common cause for these specific lights.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to expect:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. The ABS and VSA systems rely heavily on this data. If a sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the system can't get accurate readings, triggering these warning lights. Common OBD-II codes associated with this are typically in the C10XX range, such as:
    • C1000-C1003: Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction
    • C1004-C1007: Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction
    • C1008-C1011: Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction
    • C1012-C1015: Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Malfunction
  2. Damaged Wiring/Connector: The wiring harness leading to a wheel speed sensor can become frayed, corroded, or disconnected, leading to a loss of signal.
  3. ABS Module Failure: While less common, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is usually a more expensive repair.
  4. Low Brake Fluid: Extremely low brake fluid can sometimes trigger ABS/VSA lights, though it's usually accompanied by a brake system warning light.
  5. Steering Angle Sensor: The VSA system also uses a steering angle sensor. If this sensor is faulty or out of calibration, it can trigger the VSA light, and sometimes the ABS light as well.

When to See a Shop:

It's crucial to have your 2022 Acura MDX diagnosed by a professional mechanic or an Acura dealership as soon as possible. While the car might seem to drive normally, your ABS and VSA systems are currently disabled, meaning you won't have anti-lock braking or stability control in emergency situations. A shop will:

  • Connect a diagnostic scanner to retrieve any stored trouble codes (DTCs). This is the most critical first step, as the codes will pinpoint the specific area of concern.
  • Perform a visual inspection of all wheel speed sensors and their wiring for damage or debris.
  • Test the resistance and signal output of the suspected sensor.
  • If no sensor issue is found, they will proceed to check the ABS module and other related components.

Do not delay this diagnosis, as these systems are vital for your safety.
