Vehicle: 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec

Hey everyone,

I recently got a 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec with the 2.0L turbocharged engine, and I'm a bit disappointed with the acceleration response. There's a noticeable turbo lag, especially when I try to accelerate quickly from a low speed or when merging onto the highway. It feels like there's a significant delay before the power kicks in.

It's not a consistent issue, but it's frequent enough to be annoying. Sometimes it feels smooth, other times it's like the engine is struggling to spool up. I've tried different drive modes, but it doesn't seem to make a huge difference. Is this normal for this engine, or could something be wrong? The car only has 15,000 miles.

No check engine light, but the performance isn't what I expected.

Hello Mike T.,

Experiencing turbo lag and hesitation on acceleration with your 2022 Acura MDX 2.0T A-Spec is a common complaint for some owners, but it's important to differentiate between normal turbo characteristics and a potential issue.

Here's what could be happening:

  1. Normal Turbo Operation: All turbocharged engines have some degree of 'lag' as the turbocharger needs exhaust gases to spool up and generate boost. The 2.0T in the MDX is tuned for a balance of power and efficiency, and its power delivery might feel different if you're used to naturally aspirated engines.
  2. Software Calibration: Engine control unit (ECU) and transmission control unit (TCU) software can significantly impact throttle response and turbo spool-up. Acura might have updates available to refine this behavior. Sometimes, the transmission's programming can also contribute to perceived lag by not downshifting quickly enough.
  3. Boost Leaks: Even small leaks in the intake system (intercooler hoses, clamps, or the intercooler itself) can prevent the turbo from building full boost, leading to noticeable hesitation. These leaks might not always trigger a check engine light immediately.
  4. Wastegate/Bypass Valve Issues: A malfunctioning wastegate or bypass valve can prevent the turbo from building or holding boost efficiently. If stuck open, it can cause underboost conditions (P0299).
  5. Fuel System/Ignition: Less likely given the low mileage, but issues with fuel delivery (clogged filter, weak pump) or ignition components (spark plugs, coils) can also cause hesitation.

When to See a Shop: Since you're experiencing inconsistent performance, it's best to have your MDX inspected by an Acura dealership. They can perform a diagnostic scan for any pending codes (even without a CEL) and check for any available software updates. They can also physically inspect the turbocharger system for leaks or component issues. Describing the specific conditions under which the lag occurs will help them diagnose it more effectively.
