Vehicle: 2022 Acura MDX Technology

Hi everyone,

My 2022 Acura MDX with the Technology package just threw a Check Engine Light, and it's running really rough. When I scanned it, I got multiple misfire codes: P0301, P0303, and P0305. These are for cylinders 1, 3, and 5, which I believe are on the same bank for the V6 engine.

The engine feels like it's shaking, and there's a noticeable loss of power. It started pretty suddenly. I haven't done any recent work on it, and it's got about 45,000 miles on it.

Could this be spark plugs, ignition coils, or something more serious like a fuel injector issue? Any advice on what to check first for these specific cylinders would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Multiple misfire codes (P030x) on specific cylinders, especially on one bank (cylinders 1, 3, 5 on the front bank of the J35 engine in your MDX), indicate a significant issue affecting combustion. This requires prompt attention to prevent potential damage to the catalytic converter.

Common Causes for Multiple Misfires on One Bank:

  • Ignition System:
    • Spark Plugs: Worn, fouled, or incorrectly gapped spark plugs.
    • Ignition Coils: Failing ignition coils for those specific cylinders. While less common for multiple to fail simultaneously, it's possible.
  • Fuel System:
    • Fuel Injectors: Clogged, dirty, or failing fuel injectors for cylinders 1, 3, and 5. This is a strong possibility given the bank-specific nature.
    • Fuel Pressure Regulator/Pump: Low fuel pressure affecting the entire bank.
  • Air/Vacuum Leaks: A significant vacuum leak affecting only one bank (less common but possible if near the intake manifold runner for that bank).
  • Engine Mechanical Issues: (Less likely for multiple cylinders suddenly, but possible) Low compression due to valve issues or head gasket problems.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Spark Plugs: If they haven't been replaced recently (Acura recommends around 100k miles), inspect the plugs for cylinders 1, 3, and 5 for fouling, wear, or damage.
  2. Swap Ignition Coils: To diagnose if it's an ignition coil, swap the coils from a misfiring cylinder (e.g., #1) with a non-misfiring cylinder (if any, or a known good one). If the misfire code moves to the new cylinder, the coil is faulty.
  3. Fuel Injector Test: This often requires specialized equipment. A mechanic can test fuel injector pulse and spray pattern. You can also try adding a high-quality fuel system cleaner, though for severe clogs, it might not be enough.
  4. Check for Vacuum Leaks: Listen for hissing sounds around the intake manifold, especially on the affected bank. A smoke test can pinpoint small leaks.

When to See a Shop:

Given the multiple misfires and rough running, it's highly recommended to have your 2022 MDX diagnosed by an Acura dealership or a trusted independent mechanic immediately. Continued driving with multiple misfires can lead to:

  • Catalytic Converter Damage: Unburnt fuel entering the exhaust can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter.
  • Engine Damage: Prolonged misfires can put undue stress on engine components.

They can perform a comprehensive diagnosis including fuel pressure tests, injector flow tests, compression tests, and advanced ignition system diagnostics to accurately identify and resolve the issue.
