Vehicle: 2017 Acura MDX SH-AWD

Hello forum, I'm experiencing an issue with my 2017 Acura MDX SH-AWD. This morning, both the ABS warning light and the VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) warning light came on simultaneously on my dashboard.

I haven't noticed any immediate changes in how the car drives or brakes, but I'm concerned about these critical safety systems being offline. I tried turning the car off and on again, but the lights remain illuminated.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Is there a common cause for both of these lights to come on together? What should be my first step?

When both the ABS and VSA warning lights illuminate on your 2017 Acura MDX SH-AWD, it indicates a fault within the anti-lock braking system or the vehicle stability assist system, which are interconnected. While the car may seem to drive normally, these crucial safety features are likely disabled.

  1. Check Brake Fluid Level: Start by checking your brake fluid reservoir. A low brake fluid level can sometimes trigger these warnings, as it can affect the pressure sensing within the ABS system.
  2. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The most important first step is to get the vehicle scanned for codes. A standard OBD-II scanner might show generic powertrain codes, but a more advanced scanner (or a visit to a shop) can read specific ABS/VSA codes. Common codes related to these systems include:
    • C1100-C1120: Wheel Speed Sensor related faults (e.g., C1100: ABS Pump Motor Failure, C1110: ABS Pump Motor Stuck ON, C1111: ABS Pump Motor Stuck OFF)
    • C1200-C1220: ABS Module or Solenoid Valve faults.
    • C1300-C1320: Pressure Sensor faults.
  3. Inspect Wheel Speed Sensors: These sensors (one at each wheel) monitor wheel rotation. If a sensor is dirty, damaged, or its wiring is compromised, it can send incorrect signals, disabling both ABS and VSA. Visually inspect the sensors and their wiring for any obvious damage.
  4. Battery Voltage: Sometimes, a weak battery or charging system issue can cause various warning lights to appear due to insufficient voltage to critical modules.

Causes:

  • Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: The most common cause.
  • ABS Module Failure: Less common, but the control unit itself can fail.
  • Low Brake Fluid: Can trigger pressure-related warnings.
  • Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring to sensors or the ABS module.
  • Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch can sometimes confuse the VSA system.

When to See a Shop: Since these are critical safety systems, it's highly recommended to have your MDX diagnosed by a professional mechanic or an Acura dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to read the specific ABS/VSA codes and accurately pinpoint the problem. Driving without these systems can compromise your ability to maintain control during emergency braking or in slippery conditions.
