Vehicle: 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec

Hello fellow MDX owners,

I've recently started hearing a distinct clunking or rattling noise from the front end of my 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec, especially when going over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It sounds like something is loose and hitting against another component. My MDX only has about 30,000 miles on it.

The noise seems to be more prominent on the driver's side, but it's hard to tell for sure. I haven't hit any major potholes recently. Is this a common issue for the newer generation MDX, or could it be something simple? What should I be looking for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension, especially over bumps, is a classic symptom of worn or loose suspension components. Even with 30,000 miles on your 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec, certain parts can wear prematurely or become loose.

Common Causes:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common culprit. The bushings or ball joints in the end links can wear out, causing a clunking noise as the sway bar moves.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: Worn bushings in the lower or upper control arms can lead to excessive play and noise.
  3. Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints can create clunking sounds.
  4. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of the struts can wear, leading to noise, especially when turning or going over bumps.
  5. Loose Components: Sometimes, it's as simple as a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose heat shield.

What to Check/Do (Visual Inspection - only if you're comfortable and safe):

  1. Shake Test: With the vehicle safely on jack stands (or a lift), try to shake the wheels at 12 and 6 o'clock positions (up/down) and 3 and 9 o'clock positions (left/right) to check for play in ball joints or wheel bearings. Listen for any clunking.
  2. Inspect Sway Bar Links: Look for any torn rubber boots or excessive play in the sway bar end links connecting the sway bar to the strut.
  3. Bushings: Visually inspect all rubber bushings on control arms and other suspension components for cracks, tears, or signs of deterioration.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately if you notice significant play in the wheel, or if the noise is accompanied by steering issues or instability.
  • If you're not comfortable performing a visual inspection or can't identify the source of the noise.
  • If the noise persists or worsens.

There are generally no OBD codes associated with mechanical suspension noises. An Acura dealership or a trusted independent mechanic specializing in suspension work can perform a thorough inspection. They will put the vehicle on a lift and use pry bars to check for play in all suspension components. Since your MDX is a 2022 model, it's likely still under the factory warranty (3-year/36,000-mile basic, 5-year/50,000-mile powertrain), so a dealership visit is highly recommended.
