Vehicle: 2020 Acura MDX Technology

Hi all,

I'm having persistent issues with the infotainment system in my 2020 Acura MDX Technology package. The upper screen frequently freezes, becoming unresponsive to touch or the control knob. When this happens, Apple CarPlay also disconnects or simply won't launch. It's incredibly frustrating, especially when relying on navigation.

Sometimes it resolves itself after restarting the car, but it's happening almost daily now. I've tried soft resets by holding down the power button, but it's a temporary fix at best. Is this a common problem for the 2020 models? What could be causing this, and what's the best way to get it fixed?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches, including screen freezing and Apple CarPlay disconnections, are not uncommon across various vehicle manufacturers, and the 2020 Acura MDX is no exception. These issues are typically software-related, but can sometimes point to hardware problems.

Common Causes:

  1. Software Bugs: The infotainment system's operating software can have bugs that lead to instability, freezing, or conflicts with external devices like iPhones.
  2. Outdated Software: Older software versions might lack critical fixes or optimizations for newer phone operating systems.
  3. Loose Connections: Less common, but a loose cable connection to the head unit or USB ports could cause intermittent connectivity.
  4. Hardware Malfunction: In rare cases, the head unit itself or a component within it might be failing.

What to Check/Do:

  1. Hard Reset: Try a more thorough reset. In some MDX models, holding the audio power button for 10-15 seconds until the system reboots can perform a deeper reset. Consult your owner's manual for specific instructions.
  2. Check USB Cable/Device: Ensure you are using a genuine Apple USB cable (or a high-quality MFi certified cable) and that your iPhone's iOS is up to date. Sometimes, a faulty cable or a phone issue can mimic a car issue.
  3. Delete and Re-pair: On your iPhone, forget the MDX from CarPlay settings. On the MDX, delete your phone from the system's paired devices. Then, re-pair from scratch.

When to See a Shop:

  • If the issue persists after performing resets and verifying your phone/cable.
  • If the screen remains completely black or unresponsive for extended periods.
  • If the problem is accompanied by other electrical anomalies.

There are typically no OBD codes associated with infotainment issues unless it's part of a broader electrical system fault. An Acura dealership can check for any available software updates for your infotainment system. They can also perform diagnostic tests on the head unit and associated wiring to determine if a hardware replacement is necessary. Since your vehicle is a 2020 model, it might still be under warranty, making a dealership visit the most cost-effective solution.
