Vehicle: 2017 Acura MDX Advance

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing some really rough shifting lately on my 2017 Acura MDX Advance, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes downshifting. It feels like the transmission is hesitating or clunking into gear, which is pretty unsettling. It's got about 75,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else experienced this with their 9-speed transmission? I'm worried it might be a major issue. The check engine light hasn't come on yet, but the driving experience is definitely not smooth anymore. Any ideas what could be causing this or what I should check first?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting in the 2017 Acura MDX's 9-speed automatic transmission is a known concern for some owners. This can stem from several causes, ranging from minor to more significant issues.

Common Causes:

  1. Transmission Fluid Issues: Low, old, or contaminated transmission fluid can lead to poor shifting performance. The 9-speed transmission is sensitive to fluid quality.
  2. Software Updates: Acura released several software updates for the 9-speed transmission to address shifting logic and smoothness. If your vehicle hasn't had these updates, it could be a contributing factor.
  3. Transmission Solenoids: Faulty or sticking solenoids within the valve body can disrupt proper gear engagement.
  4. Internal Wear: While less common at 75,000 miles without a CEL, internal wear of clutch packs or other components could be a cause.

What to Check/Do:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: Ensure the transmission fluid level is correct and the fluid appears clean (red/pink, not dark brown or black). This is a specialized process for sealed transmissions, often requiring a shop.
  2. Recall/TSB Check: Visit an Acura dealership or use your VIN to check for any outstanding Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) or recalls related to the transmission or its software.
  3. Reset Transmission Adaptive Learning: Sometimes, resetting the transmission's adaptive learning can help. This typically requires a diagnostic tool or a dealership visit.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately if the Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminates. Possible OBD codes could include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific gear ratio errors (P0730-P0736).
  • If the issue persists after checking for software updates or fluid levels.
  • If you notice any new noises, burning smells, or a complete loss of power.

An Acura-certified technician can perform a thorough diagnostic scan, check for specific trouble codes, inspect the transmission fluid, and advise on necessary software updates or repairs. Addressing this early can prevent more extensive damage.
