Vehicle: 2017 Acura NSX

My 2017 Acura NSX (base model) recently threw a "Check Hybrid System" warning light on the dash. I've also noticed a significant reduction in power, especially during acceleration. It feels like the electric motors aren't assisting as they should.

This happened suddenly after a short drive. The car is still drivable but definitely not performing at its best. I'm worried about potential battery issues or something more serious with the complex hybrid powertrain. Has anyone else experienced this with their NSX?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Diagnose Warning Lights: A "Check Hybrid System" light indicates a fault within the vehicle's complex hybrid powertrain. This often triggers specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that can pinpoint the exact issue.
  2. Common Causes: For the NSX, this can range from a failing 12V auxiliary battery (which can affect hybrid system control) to issues with the high-voltage hybrid battery pack itself, the Power Drive Unit (PDU), or the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system components.
  3. OBD Codes to Look For: Common codes include P0A80 (Replace Hybrid Battery Pack), P0AFA (Hybrid Battery System Voltage Low), or various P-codes related to inverter or motor generator performance.
  4. When to See a Shop: It is critical to have this issue diagnosed by an Acura dealership or a specialized hybrid vehicle repair shop as soon as possible. The hybrid system operates at high voltages, and improper diagnosis or repair can be extremely dangerous. Continuing to drive with a significant power reduction could also strain other components. They have the specialized tools and training to safely and accurately identify the root cause and perform necessary repairs, which might involve software updates, component replacement, or battery conditioning.
