Vehicle: 2021 Acura NSX Type S

I just got a "Check Adaptive Damper System" warning on my 2021 Acura NSX Type S. Immediately after, the ride felt noticeably stiffer on one side, almost like the suspension isn't adjusting at all. It's quite jarring over bumps.

I also heard a slight clunking sound coming from the front passenger side when going over uneven pavement. This is a relatively new car, and I'm surprised to see this issue already. What could be causing this problem?

Is it safe to drive the car in this condition, or should I avoid it until it's checked out? Any insights from other Type S owners would be helpful.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The "Check Adaptive Damper System" warning on your 2021 Acura NSX Type S, coupled with an uneven and stiff ride and a clunking noise, indicates a problem with the vehicle's sophisticated magnetic ride control (MRC) suspension system. This system uses magnetorheological fluid to adjust damping forces almost instantaneously.

  1. Understanding the Adaptive Damper System:
    • The NSX Type S utilizes an advanced suspension that can change its stiffness based on driving conditions and selected drive modes. Each damper contains magnetic fluid, and an electric current alters its viscosity, thus controlling damping.
  2. Possible Causes for the Warning and Symptoms:
    • Damper Failure/Leak: One of the most common causes is a faulty or leaking damper unit. If a damper is no longer able to adjust its stiffness, it can lead to an uneven ride and the system fault. A clunking sound can sometimes indicate a worn or broken component within the damper or its mounting.
    • Sensor Malfunction: The system relies on various sensors (e.g., ride height sensors, accelerometers) to determine optimal damping. A faulty sensor could send incorrect data, causing the system to throw a warning and operate incorrectly.
    • Wiring or Connector Issues: Damage to the wiring harness or a loose connector leading to one of the dampers or its control unit can interrupt communication and cause a fault.
    • Adaptive Damper Control Module (ADCM) Fault: Less common, but the central control unit for the adaptive dampers could be malfunctioning.
  3. Relevant OBD Codes (often C-series chassis codes):
    • C1800-series codes: These typically relate to specific damper circuit faults (e.g., C1800-11 for a front right damper circuit open).
    • C1801-series codes: May indicate issues with damper control unit communication or internal faults.
  4. When to See a Shop:
    • Immediately. While the car might still be drivable, the compromised suspension can affect handling, stability, and braking performance, especially in a high-performance vehicle like the NSX. It's not safe to drive at speed or aggressively with a suspension fault.
    • Have your vehicle inspected by an Acura dealership or a specialty shop with experience in advanced suspension systems. They can perform a diagnostic scan to pinpoint the exact fault code and visually inspect the dampers and associated components.
