Vehicle: 2018 Acura NSX

Hi everyone,

I'm reaching out because I've got a concerning issue with my 2018 Acura NSX. The 'Hybrid System Warning' light has come on, and it's staying on. I haven't noticed any immediate performance degradation, but I'm hesitant to drive it much with a warning like that.

The car has about 25,000 miles on it. I've checked the owner's manual, and it just says to take it to a dealer. I'm hoping someone here might have some insight or experience with this specific warning on the NSX.

Could this be something simple, or am I looking at a major hybrid battery or motor issue? What kind of diagnostic process should I expect from the dealership, and are there any common causes for this warning on the NSX?

A 'Hybrid System Warning' light on your 2018 Acura NSX is a serious indicator that requires immediate attention, given the complexity and high-performance nature of its Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system. While it's good you haven't noticed performance issues yet, driving with this warning could potentially exacerbate an underlying problem.

Potential Causes:

  1. 12V Battery Issues: Sometimes, a weak or failing 12V auxiliary battery can trigger various system warnings, including hybrid system faults, as it's crucial for starting and powering the vehicle's control modules.
  2. High-Voltage Battery Degradation/Fault: The main lithium-ion hybrid battery pack could have a failing cell, an issue with its cooling system, or a communication error.
  3. Integrated Motor Generator (IMG) or Power Drive Unit (PDU) Faults: The NSX has multiple electric motors. A fault in one of the front Twin Motor Units (TMU), the rear Direct Drive Motor, or the PDU (which manages power flow) can trigger the warning.
  4. Hybrid System Sensors: Various sensors monitor voltage, current, temperature, and insulation resistance within the hybrid system. A faulty sensor can cause the warning.
  5. Software/Firmware Glitch: Less common, but a software issue in the hybrid control module (HCM) could cause a false warning.

Diagnostics & What to Do:

  1. Do Not Clear Codes: Resist the urge to clear the codes with a generic OBD-II scanner, as this can erase valuable diagnostic data needed by the dealership.
  2. Check 12V Battery: While not always the cause, ensuring your 12V battery is in good health is a simple first step. However, this is unlikely to be the sole cause for a persistent 'Hybrid System Warning' on an NSX.
  3. Professional Diagnostic Scan: The NSX's hybrid system requires specialized diagnostic equipment (Honda's HDS or i-HDS system) to properly interrogate the Hybrid Control Module (HCM) and other related ECUs. Generic OBD-II scanners will likely only show basic powertrain codes, if any, and won't provide the depth needed for hybrid system diagnosis.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. Do not delay in taking your NSX to an authorized Acura dealership that has technicians specially trained in NSX hybrid system diagnostics and repair. The NSX requires specific high-voltage safety protocols and tools.
  • Expect a thorough diagnostic process that will involve reading proprietary codes, monitoring live data from all hybrid components, and potentially performing specific system tests. This can take time due to the system's complexity. Your vehicle is still relatively low mileage, so there's a chance it could be covered under specific hybrid component warranties, which are often longer than the standard powertrain warranty.
