Rough Shifts and Hesitation on my 2019 NSX DCT

Vehicle: 2019 Acura NSX

Lately, my 2019 Acura NSX has been experiencing some really rough shifts, especially at lower speeds and when downshifting. Sometimes it hesitates to engage a gear, and the overall shifting isn't as smooth as it used to be.

I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash yet, but it's definitely concerning. The car has about 28,000 miles on it. Is this normal wear and tear for the NSX's DCT, or could it be something more serious developing?

Has anyone else with a 2019 or similar year NSX experienced these kinds of transmission issues? What was the fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifts and hesitation in your 2019 Acura NSX's Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) are not typical for a vehicle with 28,000 miles and warrant investigation. While the NSX's DCT is a high-performance unit, it should operate smoothly.

  1. Potential Causes for DCT Issues:
    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: The DCT fluid plays a crucial role in lubrication and hydraulic operation. Low fluid levels or degraded fluid can cause shifting problems. The NSX uses specific DCT fluid that requires careful maintenance.
    • Transmission Filter Clog: A clogged transmission filter can restrict fluid flow, leading to erratic shifting.
    • Software Glitch/Update: Sometimes, transmission control module (TCM) software can develop bugs or require updates to optimize shifting performance.
    • Clutch Pack Wear: While less likely at 28k miles unless driven extremely hard, excessive wear on the clutch packs can lead to slipping or harsh engagement.
    • Mechatronics Unit Issue: The mechatronics unit controls the DCT's hydraulic and electronic functions. A fault here can cause significant shifting problems.
    • Sensor Malfunction: Speed sensors or pressure sensors within the transmission can send incorrect data to the TCM, leading to improper shift points.
  2. Diagnostic Steps:
    • Even without a dashboard light, a professional diagnostic scan can reveal pending or historical trouble codes. Look for codes like:
      • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (a generic code indicating a TCM issue)
      • Manufacturer-specific codes (e.g., P17xx or P27xx series) related to clutch pressure, gear ratio errors, or shift solenoid performance.
  3. When to See a Shop:
    • Promptly. Ignoring transmission issues can lead to more severe and costly damage. Schedule an appointment with your Acura dealership or a reputable independent shop specializing in performance vehicles.
    • They will be able to check the DCT fluid level and condition, scan for codes, and perform a thorough inspection of the transmission and its control systems. Do not attempt a DIY fluid change without proper knowledge and tools, as the NSX's DCT is complex.
