Rough Shifts on My 2019 NSX DCT - Is This Normal?

Vehicle: 2019 Acura NSX Base

Hello NSX owners,

I've noticed some increasingly rough and clunky shifts from the 9-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in my 2019 Acura NSX. It's most noticeable at lower speeds, particularly when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear, and sometimes when downshifting. It feels less smooth than it used to be, almost like a slight hesitation followed by a jolt.

I'm wondering if this is a known characteristic of the NSX's DCT, or if it's something I should be concerned about. I've heard DCTs can be a bit quirky, but this feels a bit excessive. The car has about 25,000 miles on it.

Has anyone else experienced similar shifting behavior? Could it be related to the transmission fluid, or something more serious? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Rough or clunky shifts in a dual-clutch transmission (DCT) like the one in your 2019 Acura NSX can have several potential causes. While DCTs can exhibit unique characteristics compared to traditional automatics, persistent rough shifting is often a sign of an underlying issue:

  1. Transmission Fluid Condition: The DCT fluid is crucial for smooth operation. Over time, it can degrade or become contaminated, leading to poor lubrication and increased friction. A fluid change might be necessary, ensuring the correct type and amount of fluid is used.
  2. Software Calibration: Modern DCTs rely heavily on sophisticated software for shift logic and clutch engagement. An outdated or corrupted software calibration can lead to suboptimal shifting. Check if there are any available software updates or re-calibrations for your NSX's transmission control unit (TCU).
  3. Clutch Pack Wear: The NSX's DCT uses multiple clutch packs. With mileage, these can wear down, leading to slippage or harsh engagement. This is more common in high-performance driving or if the car has been driven aggressively.
  4. Mechatronics Unit Issue: The mechatronics unit is the brain of the DCT, combining the transmission control unit with hydraulic actuators. A fault within this complex component can cause a wide range of shifting problems.

When to See a Shop:

If the rough shifting is persistent and not improving, it's advisable to have your 2019 Acura NSX inspected by an Acura dealership or a specialist familiar with high-performance DCTs. They can perform a diagnostic scan (looking for codes like P07xx - Transmission Fluid Pressure Sensor/Switch, P08xx - Transmission Component Slipping), check fluid levels and condition, and assess the health of the clutch packs and mechatronics unit. Ignoring the issue could lead to more significant transmission damage.
