Vehicle: 2022 Acura NSX Type S

I recently picked up a 2022 Acura NSX Type S, and I'm loving it, but I've started hearing a strange clunking noise from the front suspension, especially when going over small bumps or uneven pavement at low speeds. It's not constant, but definitely noticeable.

The steering also feels a little less precise than when I first got it. Given it's a Type S with the adaptive dampers, I'm concerned about what might be causing this. Could it be a bushing, a strut issue, or something with the active suspension system?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

  1. Suspension Noise Diagnosis: A clunking noise from the front suspension of a 2022 Acura NSX Type S, especially when coupled with less precise steering, indicates a mechanical issue that needs prompt attention.
  2. Common Sources of Clunking:
    • Worn or Loose Bushings: Control arm bushings, sway bar bushings, or end links are common culprits. These components isolate movement and can wear out, causing metal-on-metal contact.
    • Ball Joints: Worn ball joints can create clunking sounds and affect steering precision.
    • Strut/Damper Issues: Even with adaptive dampers, internal failures or loose mounting hardware can cause noise. Given the Type S's specialized suspension, this is a particular concern.
    • Loose Suspension Components: Nuts and bolts can sometimes loosen over time, especially after hard driving.
    • Steering Rack Issues: While less common, issues with the steering rack or its mounting can also cause clunking and affect steering feel.
  3. OBD Codes: While clunking is typically mechanical, issues with the adaptive damper system (e.g., sensor failure) could potentially trigger C-codes (Chassis codes) related to the VSA or suspension control modules. A general scan is always recommended.
  4. When to See a Shop: Do not delay in having this inspected. Suspension and steering components are critical for safety and performance, especially in a high-performance vehicle like the NSX Type S. An Acura dealership or a reputable performance shop familiar with exotic vehicles should conduct a thorough inspection. They can identify worn parts, check for loose components, and diagnose any issues with the adaptive damper system, ensuring your vehicle's handling and safety are restored.
