Vehicle: 2017 Acura NSX

Hello fellow NSX owners,

I'm experiencing an issue with my 2017 Acura NSX. Recently, I've started getting an 'Active Damper System Problem' warning message on the dash. Along with this, the ride has become noticeably stiffer, almost as if it's stuck in the most aggressive suspension setting, regardless of which drive mode I select.

I've tried cycling through the Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) modes, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. The warning light comes on shortly after starting the car. I haven't hit any major potholes or had any incidents that would explain this.

Has anyone encountered this specific issue with their NSX? Could it be a sensor, or something more serious with the active dampers themselves? Any insights would be greatly appreciated as I prepare to take it in for service.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'Active Damper System Problem' warning on your 2017 Acura NSX indicates a fault within the sophisticated electronically controlled suspension system. Given the noticeable stiffness, it suggests the system has likely defaulted to a failsafe mode, often the stiffest setting, to prevent potential damage or unsafe handling.

Common Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. Damper Unit Failure: Each active damper unit contains internal valving and an electronic actuator. A failure in one of these units (e.g., a leak, internal electrical fault, or mechanical binding) can trigger the error.
  2. Damper Position Sensors: The system relies on sensors at each wheel to determine damper position and vehicle height. A faulty sensor could send incorrect data, leading the system to malfunction.
  3. Active Damper Control Unit (ADCU): This dedicated ECU manages the active damper system. A software glitch or internal hardware failure within the ADCU could be the root cause.
  4. Wiring Harness Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring connecting the dampers, sensors, or ADCU can disrupt communication and cause errors.
  5. Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) Communication: The ADCU communicates with the IDS. A fault in this communication pathway could also lead to the warning.
  6. OBD-II Codes: The active damper system will store specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) within the vehicle's computer. These are typically chassis-related codes (C-codes). Examples might include C1500-C1599 for damper control faults, or codes specific to individual damper units (e.g., C1511 for a front-left damper issue). A specialized diagnostic tool (like the HDS) is required to read these advanced codes.

When to See a Shop:

Given the performance-critical nature of the active damper system in the NSX, it is crucial to have this issue diagnosed by an authorized Acura dealership or a specialist shop with expertise in high-performance Acura vehicles. They have the proprietary diagnostic equipment and training to accurately pinpoint the fault. Continuing to drive with a compromised active damper system can affect handling, stability, and potentially lead to premature wear on other suspension components. Provide them with details about when the error first appeared and any specific driving conditions that might have preceded it.
