Vehicle: 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid with about 75,000 miles on it. Lately, I've been getting an intermittent 'SH-AWD System Problem' warning light on my dash. It usually pops up after about 15-20 minutes of driving, especially at highway speeds, and sometimes goes away after I restart the car, but it always comes back.

I haven't noticed any immediate changes in driving feel or performance, but it's concerning. I've checked the tire pressures, and they're all good. Has anyone else experienced this with their RLX Sport Hybrid? Is this a common issue with the SH-AWD system, or could it be something simpler like a sensor?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealer.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The 'SH-AWD System Problem' warning on your 2018 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid can indicate several potential issues, ranging from minor sensor malfunctions to more significant system components. While the SH-AWD system is generally robust, complex systems can develop specific faults over time.

Common Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors: These sensors are crucial for the SH-AWD system's operation, as they provide data on individual wheel rotation. A faulty or dirty sensor can send incorrect signals, triggering the warning. This is a common culprit for intermittent warnings.
  2. Yaw Rate Sensor/G-Sensor: These sensors measure the vehicle's rotational movement and acceleration. If one is malfunctioning, the SH-AWD system might not receive accurate data, leading to a fault.
  3. SH-AWD Control Unit: Less common, but the electronic control unit (ECU) for the SH-AWD system could have an internal fault or a software glitch.
  4. Differential Fluid Level/Condition: Although you haven't mentioned performance issues, low or degraded differential fluid can sometimes contribute to system warnings, especially under load or after prolonged driving.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to any of the SH-AWD components or sensors can cause intermittent connectivity problems.
  6. OBD-II Codes: While the SH-AWD warning is specific, there might be diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the vehicle's computer. A professional scan tool (beyond a generic OBD-II reader) will be needed to read manufacturer-specific codes related to the SH-AWD system. Look for codes starting with 'C' (Chassis) or 'P' (Powertrain) that might relate to AWD. Examples could be C1800-C1899 range for AWD system faults.

When to See a Shop:

Given the complexity of the SH-AWD system and the intermittent nature of the warning, it's highly recommended to have your RLX inspected by an Acura dealership or a reputable independent shop specializing in Honda/Acura vehicles. They have the necessary diagnostic tools (like the HDS - Honda Diagnostic System) to read specific SH-AWD codes and perform a thorough system diagnosis. Continuing to drive with an SH-AWD warning could potentially lead to reduced traction control or uneven power distribution, especially in adverse conditions, although your car should still be drivable in a basic FWD mode if the system fully disengages.
