Vehicle: 2017 Acura RDX Advance

Hey everyone, I've got a 2017 Acura RDX Advance with about 70k miles on it. Lately, I've noticed the transmission has been acting really strange. When accelerating from a stop, it often feels like it's hesitating before engaging, and shifts between 2nd and 3rd gear can be pretty jerky. It's not smooth at all, and sometimes it feels like it's struggling to find the right gear. Has anyone else experienced this with their RDX? I'm worried it might be a serious issue.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission issues like jerky shifts and hesitation in your 2017 Acura RDX can be concerning, but there are several potential causes to investigate.

Common Causes:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: Over time, transmission fluid can degrade or become low, leading to poor lubrication and shifting performance. Contaminated fluid can also cause blockages.
  2. Transmission Solenoid Issues: Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid, and if one is faulty or sticking, it can lead to erratic shifting. This might trigger diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific gear ratio errors (e.g., P0731, P0732).
  3. Software Glitches: Sometimes, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can have software bugs or require an update to optimize shift points.
  4. Worn Transmission Components: While less common at 70k miles without prior issues, internal wear on clutch packs or other components can cause these symptoms.

Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: Start by checking the transmission fluid level and condition. Refer to your owner's manual for the correct procedure and fluid type (typically Acura DW-1). If it's low or looks dark/burnt, it needs attention.
  2. Scan for OBD-II Codes: Use an OBD-II scanner to check for any stored or pending diagnostic trouble codes. Even if the check engine light isn't on, there might be transmission-specific codes stored.
  3. Perform a Transmission Fluid Change: If the fluid is old or contaminated, a drain and fill (not a flush, which can sometimes dislodge debris) with genuine Acura DW-1 fluid might resolve minor issues. Multiple drain and fills over a short period can be more effective.
  4. Reset Transmission Adaptive Values: Sometimes, disconnecting the battery for 15-30 minutes can reset the TCM's adaptive learning, which might help if the issue is software-related.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately if the problem worsens, you hear grinding noises, or the vehicle enters 'limp mode.'
  • If checking fluid and scanning for codes doesn't reveal an obvious solution.
  • If you get specific transmission codes (P07xx series) that indicate internal component failure or solenoid issues.
  • For a professional diagnosis, especially if a software update or internal component repair is suspected. A qualified Acura technician can perform advanced diagnostics and recommend the appropriate repair.
