Vehicle: 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec

Hi all,

I own a 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec with about 45,000 miles. Lately, I've noticed a distinct high-pitched whine coming from the engine bay, especially when accelerating. It sounds a bit like a turbo spooling, but it's more pronounced than it used to be.

Also, on cold starts, there's a brief rattling noise that lasts for a second or two before quieting down. I've heard about VTC actuator issues on other Honda/Acura models. Could this be related to my RDX?

Any insights or similar experiences with a 2019 RDX would be helpful before I take it to the dealer. Thanks!

Your description of a high-pitched whine and cold start rattle in your 2019 Acura RDX points to a couple of common areas of concern for this model generation:

  1. Turbocharger Whine:
    • Causes: A pronounced whine from the turbocharger can indicate wear in the turbo bearings or issues with the turbocharger's impeller. While some turbo whine is normal, an increase in volume or a new, distinct sound warrants investigation.
    • Action: Check for any signs of oil leaks around the turbo assembly or excessive smoke from the exhaust. A technician can inspect the turbo for shaft play and proper operation.
  2. Cold Start Rattle (VTC Actuator):
    • Causes: The brief rattling noise on cold starts is a well-documented issue, often attributed to the Variable Timing Control (VTC) actuator. Over time, the locking pin in the actuator can wear, causing a momentary rattle until oil pressure builds up.
    • TSBs: Acura has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for VTC actuator replacement on various models, and while less prevalent on the 3rd-gen RDX, it's still a possibility. Ensure your oil changes are regular and use the recommended oil weight.
  3. When to See a Shop:
    • Soon: If the whine is persistent and loud, or if the cold start rattle becomes longer or more frequent. Early diagnosis can prevent more significant engine damage.
    • Diagnostics: A technician will listen to the engine, inspect the turbocharger, and may check for related OBD-II codes such as P0010 (VTC Actuator Circuit Malfunction) or P0011 (VTC System Performance).

Addressing these issues promptly is important for the longevity and performance of your RDX's engine and turbo system.
