2020 Acura RDX A-Spec No Start - Cranks but Won't Catch

Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec

My 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec is having a serious issue this morning. When I try to start it, it cranks strongly but just won't turn over and catch. It's like it's not getting fuel or spark.

There are no warning lights on the dash, and the battery seems fine since it's cranking so hard. I tried locking and unlocking it a few times in case it was an immobilizer issue, but no luck. I also checked the fuel cap.

This came out of nowhere. It was running perfectly yesterday. Any ideas what could be causing this? Is there a common relay or fuse I should check for the fuel pump on these RDX models?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A 'cranks but no start' condition typically points to an issue with either fuel delivery, ignition (spark), or proper air intake, assuming the engine has adequate compression. Since your 2020 Acura RDX is cranking strongly, we can likely rule out a completely dead battery or starter motor.

Here are the most common culprits and diagnostic steps:

  1. Fuel System:

    • Fuel Pump: The fuel pump might not be priming or delivering fuel. Listen for a faint whirring sound from the rear of the car for a couple of seconds when you first turn the ignition to the 'ON' position (before cranking). If you don't hear it, the pump, its fuse, or relay could be at fault.
    • Fuel Pump Fuse/Relay: Check the fuse box (both under the hood and inside the cabin) for a blown fuel pump fuse or a faulty relay. The owner's manual will specify their locations.
    • Fuel Filter: While less common for a sudden no-start on a newer vehicle, a severely clogged fuel filter could restrict flow.
  2. Ignition System (Spark):

    • Spark Plugs/Coil Packs: If one or more coil packs or spark plugs are failing, the engine won't get the necessary spark to ignite the fuel. However, a complete no-start from this usually requires multiple failures.
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor: A faulty crankshaft position sensor won't tell the ECU when to fire the spark plugs or inject fuel, leading to a no-start condition.
  3. Immobilizer System: While you tried locking/unlocking, a fault in the immobilizer system can prevent the engine from starting even if it cranks. This usually triggers a specific security light on the dash, but not always.

What to do:

  1. Check Fuses: Start by checking all relevant fuses in both fuse boxes, especially for the fuel pump and engine control unit (ECU).
  2. Listen for Fuel Pump: Have someone turn the key to 'ON' while you listen near the fuel tank for the pump priming.
  3. Professional Scan: Even without a Check Engine Light, a professional OBD-II scanner can often retrieve 'pending' or 'history' codes related to the immobilizer, crankshaft sensor, or fuel system that aren't severe enough to illuminate the CEL but are preventing a start.

When to see a shop:

If checking fuses and listening for the fuel pump doesn't reveal an obvious issue, it's best to have your Acura RDX towed to a dealership or a reputable independent mechanic. Diagnosing a no-start condition often requires specialized tools to test fuel pressure, spark, and sensor signals accurately.
