Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX Advance

Hey Acura fam,

I've got a 2020 Acura RDX Advance with about 45,000 miles on it, and lately, I've been hearing a noticeable clunking noise from the front end, especially when going over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It sounds like something is loose or hitting against something else.

The noise is more prominent on the driver's side, but I can sometimes hear it from both sides. It's not constant, only when the suspension is articulating over bumps. The steering feels okay, but the noise is really starting to bother me and makes the car feel less solid.

Has anyone with a 2020 RDX experienced a similar clunking from the front suspension? What was the cause, and what did it take to fix it? I'm hoping it's not a major repair.

Hi Mike,

That clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2020 Acura RDX is a common complaint and usually points to a few specific components that wear out over time. It's definitely something you'll want to address to maintain ride quality and safety.

Here are the most common culprits for front suspension clunking:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These small links connect the sway bar to the suspension. Their ball joints or bushings can wear out, causing a clunking or rattling noise, especially over uneven surfaces or when turning. This is one of the most frequent causes of such noises.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. They have rubber bushings that absorb shock and allow movement. If these bushings crack, tear, or wear out, they can cause metal-on-metal contact and a clunking sound.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, or the bearing within it can fail. This can lead to clunking, especially when turning or going over bumps, as the strut isn't properly supported or allowed to rotate smoothly.
  4. Ball Joints: Lower or upper ball joints (depending on suspension design) connect the steering knuckle to the control arms. Worn ball joints can cause clunking, especially when the suspension moves up and down.

When to See a Shop:

It's important to have your 2020 Acura RDX inspected by a professional mechanic promptly. While a clunking noise might seem minor, it often indicates wear in critical suspension components that affect handling, tire wear, and ultimately, safety. A technician will perform a thorough inspection, which typically includes:

  • Lifting the vehicle and visually inspecting all suspension components for wear, tears, or looseness.
  • Prying on various components (like control arms and sway bar links) to check for excessive play.
  • Checking for any signs of fluid leaks from struts or shocks.

Addressing these issues early can prevent further damage to other suspension parts and restore the smooth, quiet ride your RDX is designed to provide.
