Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX Advance

Hello Acura community,

I'm experiencing a strange issue with my 2020 Acura RDX Advance. Occasionally, when accelerating from a stop or at low speeds (around 15-30 mph), the transmission seems to hesitate or shudder slightly before engaging smoothly. It's not a hard jolt, more like a brief, inconsistent slip or vibration.

There's no Check Engine Light on, and I haven't pulled any codes with my basic OBD-II scanner. It's very intermittent, making it hard to reproduce consistently for a mechanic. It feels like it's getting a little more frequent lately, especially when the car is warm.

Has anyone with a 2020 RDX experienced anything similar? Could this be a software issue, or something more serious with the 10-speed transmission? Any insights would be helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent transmission hesitation or shudder in a 2020 Acura RDX, even without a Check Engine Light, is a concern that warrants attention. While the 10-speed automatic transmission is generally robust, these symptoms can indicate several potential issues.

Common Causes:

  • Transmission Fluid Condition: Low or degraded transmission fluid can lead to poor shifting performance. Even if the fluid level appears correct, its quality can degrade over time.
  • Torque Converter Issues: The torque converter can sometimes cause shuddering, especially at specific speeds or during lock-up, if there's internal wear or fluid flow problems.
  • Software Glitches/Updates: Modern transmissions are heavily controlled by software. Outdated or corrupted transmission control module (TCM) software can lead to erratic shifting behavior.
  • Solenoid Malfunctions: Internal transmission solenoids control fluid flow and gear engagement. A sticking or failing solenoid can cause hesitation.
  • Internal Wear: While less common on newer vehicles, internal clutch pack or valve body wear could manifest as intermittent shuddering.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid: While there might not be a dipstick, ensure the fluid level is correct and note its color and smell. Burnt smell or dark color indicates degradation.
  2. Note Conditions: Pay close attention to when the shudder occurs: specific gears, engine temperature, acceleration intensity, etc. This information is vital for diagnosis.
  3. Scan for Pending Codes: Even without a CEL, a more advanced scanner might reveal pending or historical transmission-related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that a basic scanner might miss.

When to See a Shop:

Given the complexity of modern transmissions, it's highly recommended to take your 2020 RDX to an Acura dealership or a reputable transmission specialist as soon as possible. They can perform:

  • Advanced Diagnostic Scan: Use a Honda/Acura specific diagnostic tool (HDS) to check for all stored transmission codes, sensor readings, and software versions.
  • Transmission Software Update: Check if there are any available software updates or technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to transmission shifting for your model year.
  • Fluid Inspection and Replacement: If fluid quality is suspect, a transmission fluid flush and replacement with genuine Acura DW-1 fluid might be recommended.
  • Road Test with Data Logging: A technician can drive the vehicle while monitoring live transmission data to pinpoint the exact conditions causing the shudder.

Early diagnosis can prevent minor issues from escalating into major transmission repairs.
