Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX Advance

Hi all,

My 2020 Acura RDX Advance trim has been giving me trouble with the Blind Spot Information (BSI) system. The warning light for the BSI system has come on permanently on the dash, and the system just isn't working. It used to work perfectly, but now it's completely inactive.

I've tried cleaning the rear bumper where the sensors are located, thinking maybe dirt or mud was obstructing them, but that didn't help. There's no visible damage to the bumper either. I'm worried it might be a sensor or a module issue.

Has anyone else experienced this with their RDX? What was the fix? Is this something I can reset myself?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It's frustrating when safety features like the Blind Spot Information (BSI) system malfunction. A persistent warning light usually indicates a fault that needs attention. While cleaning the sensors was a good first step, the issue likely lies deeper.

Here are potential causes and diagnostic steps:

  1. Sensor Malfunction: The BSI system relies on radar sensors located in the rear bumper. These sensors can fail due to internal defects, water intrusion, or impact, even if there's no visible exterior damage. A faulty sensor will trigger the warning light.

  2. Wiring Harness Issue: Damage to the wiring harness connecting the BSI sensors to the control module can interrupt communication, leading to system failure. This could be due to rodent damage, chafing, or corrosion.

  3. BSI Control Module Failure: Less common, but the BSI control module itself can fail. This module processes the sensor data and communicates with the vehicle's main computer.

  4. Calibration Issue: After a repair or even a minor bump, the BSI sensors might require recalibration. If they are misaligned, they won't function correctly.

Diagnostics:

  • A professional scan tool is necessary to read specific BSI system diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Generic OBD-II scanners may not access these proprietary codes. Common codes might include B1800 series for sensor faults or U-codes for communication errors (e.g., U0155 - Lost Communication with Body Control Module).

When to See a Shop:

Given that the warning light is persistent and the system is inactive, it's highly recommended to take your 2020 Acura RDX to an Acura dealership or a reputable independent shop specializing in advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). They have the specific diagnostic equipment and expertise to:

  • Read the precise BSI system fault codes.
  • Test the individual sensors and wiring.
  • Perform any necessary sensor replacements and recalibrations.
  • Diagnose and replace the BSI control module if needed.

Attempting to reset it yourself without addressing the underlying cause will likely only provide a temporary fix, if any.
