Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX Advance

Hey everyone,

I'm having some frustrating issues with the infotainment system in my 2020 Acura RDX Advance. Lately, the screen has been freezing up completely, sometimes becoming unresponsive for minutes at a time. It's really annoying, especially when I'm trying to use navigation or change audio settings.

On top of that, my Apple CarPlay keeps disconnecting randomly. It'll work fine for a while, then suddenly drop out, and sometimes it won't reconnect unless I restart the car. I've tried soft resets by holding down the power button, but the problem always comes back.

Has anyone else experienced this with their RDX, especially the 2020 model year? Any tips or tricks before I take it to the dealership?

Infotainment system glitches like freezing screens and CarPlay disconnections are not uncommon, especially with modern complex systems. For your 2020 Acura RDX Advance, there are several steps you can take before needing a professional diagnosis:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: While a soft reset helps, try a more thorough system reset. Consult your owner's manual for the exact procedure, but typically it involves holding specific buttons for an extended period (e.g., power button + home button) until the system reboots completely.
  2. Check Your USB Cable: If you're using Apple CarPlay via a wired connection, a faulty or low-quality USB cable is a very common culprit for disconnections. Try a brand-new, Apple-certified cable.
  3. Update Your Phone's OS: Ensure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS. Sometimes compatibility issues arise with outdated phone software.
  4. Check for System Software Updates: Acura periodically releases over-the-air (OTA) or dealer-installed software updates for the infotainment system. These often address bugs and improve stability. You might be able to check for updates through the system settings, or your dealer can perform it.

Common Causes:

  • Software bugs within the infotainment unit.
  • Corrupted system files.
  • Faulty USB port or cable.
  • Overheating of the head unit (less common).

When to See a Shop: If the problem persists after trying these steps, it's time to visit an Acura dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for deeper software issues, hardware malfunctions, or internal module failures. They can also perform any necessary firmware updates that aren't available wirelessly. While there might not be a specific OBD-II code for infotainment freezing, the system's internal diagnostic logs can reveal errors.
