Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX Advance

Hi everyone,

I'm having a really annoying issue with the infotainment system in my 2020 Acura RDX Advance. Every so often, usually when I'm using Apple CarPlay or even just the radio, the screen will completely freeze up. It becomes unresponsive to the touchpad, and then after about 30 seconds to a minute, it just goes black and reboots itself.

This happens sporadically – sometimes it's once a week, other times it might be a few times in a single drive. It's incredibly frustrating, especially when I'm relying on navigation. I've tried doing a soft reset by holding down the audio power button, but the problem always comes back.

Is this a common bug with the True Touchpad Interface in the RDX? Are there any known fixes or software updates that address this? My RDX is a 2020 Advance trim, and it has about 45,000 miles on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The infotainment system in the 2019-2022 Acura RDX, specifically the True Touchpad Interface, has been a source of various complaints, including freezing, random reboots, and general unresponsiveness. Your experience aligns with many other owners.

Here are the common causes and potential solutions:

  1. Software Bugs & Updates: The most frequent cause is often software-related. Acura has released numerous over-the-air (OTA) and dealer-installed software updates to address stability and performance issues with the infotainment system. It's crucial to ensure your RDX has the latest software version installed. Sometimes these updates fix underlying glitches that cause freezing and reboots.
  2. Loose Connections: Less commonly, a loose connection to the main infotainment control unit or screen could cause intermittent issues. This typically requires professional diagnosis.
  3. Module Malfunction: In some cases, the infotainment control unit itself might be faulty and require replacement. This is usually a last resort after software updates and basic troubleshooting have failed.
  4. USB Device Interference: If you frequently use a USB device (for CarPlay/Android Auto or music), try removing it for a few days to see if the issue persists. A faulty cable or device can sometimes cause system instability.

What You Can Do:

  • Check for OTA Updates: Go into your infotainment settings to see if there are any pending software updates you can install yourself.
  • Perform a Hard Reset: While you've done a soft reset, sometimes a more thorough reset is needed. Consult your owner's manual or an Acura dealer for the correct procedure, which may involve disconnecting the battery for a short period (this can reset other vehicle settings).

When to See a Shop:

  • If the issue persists after ensuring all software updates are applied and you've tried a hard reset.
  • If the problem is becoming more frequent or severe, making the system unusable.
  • If you receive any error messages related to the infotainment system on the screen or dashboard.

An Acura dealership can perform a deeper diagnostic scan of the infotainment system, check for any specific TSBs related to your VIN, and determine if a hardware component needs attention. Be prepared to demonstrate the issue if it's intermittent.
