Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX Advance

Hi all,

My 2020 Acura RDX Advance has been giving me some headaches lately. The infotainment system frequently freezes, goes black, or just becomes unresponsive. It's really frustrating, especially when I'm relying on navigation or Apple CarPlay. I've tried restarting the car, but it's a temporary fix at best.

To make matters worse, I've noticed a recurring battery drain. If the car sits for more than a couple of days, the battery is dead. I had it tested, and the battery itself is fine. I'm suspecting it might be related to the infotainment system or some other electrical component not shutting down properly. Has anyone else experienced this with their 2020 RDX? Are there any known TSBs or fixes for these issues?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

You're describing two common, and often related, issues reported by owners of the 3rd generation Acura RDX (2019+), particularly concerning the infotainment system and potential parasitic battery drain.

Here's a breakdown and what to do:

  1. Infotainment System Glitches:

    • Software Updates: Acura has released numerous software updates for the True Touchpad Interface to improve stability, responsiveness, and address bugs. Ensure your RDX has the latest software version. This is typically done at the dealership, but some updates can be performed via Wi-Fi if enabled.
    • Hard Reset: You can try a hard reset of the infotainment system. While the car is on, press and hold the 'Menu', 'Back', and 'Audio Power' buttons simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds until the system reboots. This can sometimes clear temporary glitches.
    • Check for TSBs: There have been Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to infotainment system performance and connectivity issues. A dealership can check for applicable TSBs for your specific VIN.
  2. Battery Drain (Parasitic Draw):

    • Infotainment Link: A malfunctioning infotainment unit or a component connected to it (like the AcuraLink module) can sometimes fail to power down correctly, leading to a parasitic draw on the battery. This is a known cause for battery drain in some vehicles.
    • Diagnostic Scan: A professional diagnostic scan can sometimes reveal fault codes related to modules that are not entering sleep mode. While there isn't a single OBD code for 'battery drain,' codes like B1000 (related to control unit internal fault) or U-codes (network communication errors) might point to a problematic module.
    • Professional Diagnosis: Diagnosing a parasitic draw can be complex. It involves testing the amperage draw on the battery over time to identify which circuit is staying active. This is best done by a qualified technician who can systematically pull fuses and isolate the culprit.

When to See a Shop:

  • If software updates and hard resets don't resolve the infotainment issues.
  • If the battery drain persists despite confirming the battery itself is healthy.
  • If you're unable to diagnose the parasitic draw yourself.

It's highly recommended to take your RDX to an Acura dealership. They have specialized tools and access to the latest TSBs and software updates to properly diagnose and resolve these interconnected issues.
