Vehicle: 2021 Acura RDX SH-AWD

Hey everyone,

My 2021 Acura RDX SH-AWD, which has about 48,000 miles on it, just threw a check engine light. I also noticed a pretty rough idle this morning when I started it up, and it felt a little sluggish on acceleration.

I pulled out my OBD scanner and it's showing a P0301 code, which I know means a misfire on cylinder 1. I'm trying to figure out if this is something I can tackle myself or if I need to take it to the dealer right away.

Could this be a bad spark plug, an ignition coil, or something else? I've never really done much engine work beyond oil changes. Any tips on diagnosing this further or if it's a common issue on the 2021 RDX would be super helpful. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A P0301 code indicating a misfire on cylinder 1, accompanied by a rough idle and check engine light, is a common diagnostic scenario. For your 2021 Acura RDX with 48,000 miles, the most likely culprits are related to the ignition system.

Here's a systematic approach to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Confirm the Misfire:

    • Since you have an OBD scanner, clear the code and see if it returns immediately. Sometimes a one-off event can trigger it. If it returns, proceed with diagnosis.
  2. Swap Components (DIY Diagnostic):

    • Ignition Coil: The easiest first step is to swap the ignition coil from cylinder 1 to an adjacent cylinder (e.g., cylinder 2 or 3). Drive the car briefly or let it idle until the check engine light returns. If the code changes to P0302 (misfire on cylinder 2) or P0303, then you've identified a faulty ignition coil. This is a relatively simple DIY fix.
    • Spark Plug: If swapping the coil doesn't change the misfire cylinder, the next step is to swap the spark plug from cylinder 1 to another cylinder. Again, if the misfire follows the plug, you have a bad spark plug. While spark plugs on the 2021 RDX are generally rated for 100,000+ miles, premature failure can occur.
  3. Inspect Components:

    • When you remove the spark plug from cylinder 1, inspect it for signs of fouling (oil, carbon, fuel) or damage.
    • Check the ignition coil for any cracks or signs of arcing.

Common Causes for P0301:

  • Faulty Ignition Coil: This is very common. The coil provides the high voltage to ignite the spark plug.
  • Worn or Fouled Spark Plug: While less likely at 48k miles, a defective plug can cause misfires.
  • Fuel Injector Issue: A clogged or faulty fuel injector for cylinder 1 could lead to insufficient fuel delivery. This is harder to diagnose without specialized tools.
  • Compression Issue: In rare cases, low compression in cylinder 1 (due to valve issues, head gasket, etc.) can cause a misfire. This would require a compression test.
  • Vacuum Leak: A vacuum leak affecting a specific cylinder's air-fuel mixture could also cause a misfire, though usually, this would affect multiple cylinders or cause a lean code.

When to See a Shop:

  • If swapping the coil and plug doesn't resolve the issue, or if the misfire persists.
  • If you suspect a fuel injector problem (e.g., strong fuel smell, black smoke).
  • If you lack the tools or confidence to perform the diagnostic swaps yourself.
  • If the check engine light is flashing, which indicates a severe misfire that could damage the catalytic converter. Drive as little as possible if this occurs.
  • An Acura dealership or a reputable independent mechanic can perform more advanced diagnostics, including fuel pressure tests, injector tests, and compression tests.
