Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec

I've noticed a distinct clunking sound coming from the front end of my 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec whenever I go over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven pavement. It's getting worse and is really noticeable now, especially at lower speeds.

The car has about 30,000 miles on it, and I haven't had any major incidents or accidents. The steering feels normal, and I haven't noticed any pulling, but the noise is concerning. It sounds like something loose.

What could be causing this clunking? Are there any common issues with the RDX's front suspension that I should be aware of or check for myself before taking it to a mechanic?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec, especially over bumps, often points to a worn or loose component. Here are the most common culprits:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These small links connect the sway bar to the control arm or strut. Their bushings or ball joints can wear out, causing a clunking sound as the suspension moves up and down. This is a very common failure point in many vehicles, including Acuras.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle's frame. Rubber bushings at the pivot points can deteriorate over time, leading to play and a clunking noise. Worn ball joints in the control arm can also cause similar symptoms.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, causing noise when the suspension compresses or rebounds. The strut bearing, which allows the strut to rotate with the steering, can also fail.
  4. Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose caliper can mimic a suspension clunk.

When to See a Shop:

  • Professional Diagnosis: It's highly recommended to have a qualified mechanic inspect the suspension. Diagnosing suspension noises can be tricky and often requires lifting the vehicle and checking for play in various components.
  • Safety Concern: Worn suspension components can affect handling and stability, potentially compromising safety. Addressing the issue promptly prevents further wear on other parts and ensures your RDX handles as it should.
