Vehicle: 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec

Hi everyone,

My 2020 Acura RDX with the 2.0L turbo engine just hit around 65,000 miles. Lately, I've noticed a rough idle, especially when the engine is cold. It also feels like it's hesitating a bit under acceleration, and I even got a check engine light a couple of times that eventually went off. I scanned it and got a P0302 code (Cylinder 2 Misfire).

Could this be a sign that it's time to replace the spark plugs? What's the recommended interval for these engines? Is this a job I can tackle myself, or is it best left to the dealership? Any specific plug recommendations?

Thanks for the help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like your 2020 Acura RDX is definitely experiencing symptoms consistent with worn spark plugs, especially with the P0302 misfire code for Cylinder 2. This is a common maintenance item that can significantly impact engine performance and fuel economy.

  1. Recommended Interval: For the 2.0L turbocharged engine in your 2020 RDX, Acura generally recommends replacing the spark plugs around the 60,000 to 100,000-mile mark, depending on driving conditions and specific maintenance minder codes. Given your 65,000 miles and the symptoms, it's certainly time to consider replacement.

  2. Causes of Symptoms:

    • Worn Electrodes: Over time, the electrodes on spark plugs erode, increasing the gap and requiring more voltage to fire. This leads to weaker sparks and incomplete combustion.
    • Carbon Buildup: Carbon deposits can accumulate on the spark plug tips, fouling them and preventing proper ignition.
    • Misfires (P0302): When a cylinder doesn't ignite the fuel-air mixture properly, the engine control unit (ECU) detects a misfire and stores a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) like P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire). This causes rough idle, hesitation, and reduced power.
  3. DIY vs. Professional: Replacing spark plugs on the 2.0L turbo engine in the RDX is a moderately difficult DIY task. It involves removing the engine cover, ignition coils, and then the plugs themselves. You'll need a torque wrench to ensure proper installation and prevent damage. It's crucial to use the correct OEM-specified iridium spark plugs (e.g., NGK or Denso, as specified by Acura) and to gap them correctly if they aren't pre-gapped. If you're comfortable with basic hand tools and following a guide, it's doable. Otherwise, a professional can ensure it's done correctly.

  4. When to See a Shop:

    • If you're not confident in your mechanical skills or don't have the right tools (especially a torque wrench), a professional is recommended.
    • If replacing the spark plugs doesn't resolve the misfire or rough idle, it could indicate other issues such as a faulty ignition coil, fuel injector problem, or even a compression issue. In this case, further professional diagnosis is necessary.
