Vehicle: 2018 Acura RDX AWD

Hello fellow RDX owners,

I've been noticing some concerning issues with the transmission in my 2018 Acura RDX AWD. It has about 75,000 miles on it. The main problem is a noticeable hesitation and rough shifting, especially when accelerating from a stop or at lower speeds (around 20-40 mph).

It feels like the transmission is struggling to find the right gear, sometimes lurching into place. It's not consistent, but it's happening more frequently now. I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash yet, but the driving experience is definitely degraded.

Has anyone with a similar model year RDX experienced anything like this? What was the fix? I'm worried it might be something serious.

Rough shifting and hesitation in an automatic transmission, particularly in a vehicle with 75,000 miles like your 2018 Acura RDX AWD, can stem from several issues. It's important to address this promptly to prevent further damage.

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Quality: This is the first and easiest step. Low or dirty transmission fluid can significantly impact shifting performance. Acura transmissions are sensitive to fluid quality. Ensure you use only genuine Acura DW-1 transmission fluid. If the fluid is dark, smells burnt, or is low, a fluid change (not a flush) might be necessary.
  2. Transmission Software Update: Modern transmissions are heavily controlled by software. Acura may have released software updates to improve shift logic and address known issues. A dealership can check for and apply these updates.
  3. Inspect Transmission Sensors: Sensors like the transmission range sensor, input/output speed sensors, or pressure switches can malfunction, sending incorrect data to the transmission control module (TCM), leading to erratic shifts. While you haven't seen a check engine light, these issues can sometimes log 'pending' codes.
  4. Valve Body Issues: The valve body is a complex component that directs transmission fluid to engage gears. Wear or blockages in the valve body can cause rough shifts.

Common OBD-II Codes (if a light comes on):

  • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (generic code indicating a problem).
  • P07XX series: Specific codes related to shift solenoids, pressure switches, or speed sensors (e.g., P0740 for Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction).

When to See a Shop: If checking the fluid doesn't resolve the issue, or if you notice any warning lights (like the 'Check Engine' light or a specific transmission warning light), it's crucial to have your RDX professionally diagnosed by an Acura specialist. They can perform advanced diagnostics, check for hidden codes, and determine if internal transmission components or the torque converter require attention. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more costly repairs down the line.
