Vehicle: 2016 Acura RDX AWD

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing some concerning issues with the brakes on my 2016 Acura RDX AWD. Firstly, I'm getting a persistent squealing noise, especially at low speeds, even when I'm just lightly pressing the pedal. Secondly, when I brake from highway speeds (around 60-70 mph), I feel a noticeable vibration through the steering wheel.

The car has about 90,000 miles on it, and I haven't had the brakes serviced in a while. Could this be just worn pads and warped rotors, or something more serious? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Your description of squealing brakes and steering wheel vibration when braking points to common brake system issues on your 2016 Acura RDX. Here's a breakdown of the likely causes and what to do:

  1. Squealing Brakes (Low Speed):

    • Worn Brake Pads: This is the most common cause. Brake pads have wear indicators (small metal tabs) that produce a high-pitched squeal when the pads are worn down to a critical level, indicating they need replacement.
    • Glazed Pads/Rotors: Sometimes, if brakes get too hot, the pad material can glaze, or a thin layer of pad material can transfer unevenly to the rotor, causing noise.
    • Improper Installation/Cheap Pads: If pads were recently replaced, improper installation (lack of shims, lubricant) or low-quality aftermarket pads can cause noise.
  2. Steering Wheel Vibration (Highway Braking):

    • Warped Brake Rotors: This is the primary suspect for vibration during braking, especially at higher speeds. Rotors can warp due to excessive heat, leading to an uneven surface that causes the caliper to pulsate against the wheel, resulting in vibration.
    • Uneven Pad Wear: If pads are wearing unevenly, it can contribute to rotor warping and vibration.
    • Suspension/Steering Components: While less likely to cause vibration only during braking, worn tie rods, ball joints, or wheel bearings can exacerbate brake-induced vibrations.

What to Do:

  1. Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect your brake pads and rotors. You can often see the thickness of the pads through the wheel spokes. Look for grooves, discoloration, or uneven wear on the rotors.
  2. Listen for Wear Indicators: If the squeal is constant when braking, it's very likely the wear indicators on your pads.

When to See a Shop:

Given the mileage and symptoms, it's highly recommended to have your 2016 RDX's brake system inspected by a professional technician immediately. They can:

  • Accurately measure brake pad thickness.
  • Check rotor runout (to confirm warping).
  • Inspect calipers for proper function (seizing calipers can cause uneven wear).
  • Evaluate other suspension and steering components.

Brakes are a critical safety system; do not delay addressing these issues.
