Vehicle: 2017 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid

Hey everyone, I've got a 2017 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid with about 60,000 miles on it, and I've noticed a persistent clunking noise coming from the front suspension. It's most noticeable when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or any uneven road surface.

The noise sounds like a loose metal-on-metal clunk, and it's pretty unsettling. It seems to be coming from both sides of the front end. I haven't hit any major potholes recently, so I'm a bit stumped.

Has anyone with an RLX experienced similar front suspension noises? What were the common culprits? I'm hoping it's something relatively simple to fix. Thanks for your input!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2017 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid is a common indicator of worn or damaged suspension components. This issue typically worsens over time and can affect ride quality and handling. There are no OBD-II codes associated with mechanical suspension noises.

  1. Common Causes of Front Suspension Clunking:

    • Sway Bar End Links: These are very common culprits. The bushings or ball joints on the end links can wear out, causing a clunking noise as the sway bar moves.
    • Sway Bar Bushings: The bushings that hold the sway bar to the frame can also wear, allowing the bar to move and clunk.
    • Lower Ball Joints: Worn lower ball joints in the control arms can cause a clunking sound, especially when turning or going over bumps.
    • Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings in the control arms can deteriorate, leading to excessive movement and noise.
    • Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of the front struts can wear out, causing a clunk or thud. The strut bearings can also seize, leading to noise when turning.
    • Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a bolt on a suspension component can come loose.
  2. What to Inspect (Visually, if safe):

    • Look for torn rubber boots on ball joints and tie rod ends.
    • Check for cracks or excessive play in control arm bushings.
    • Listen for distinct noises when pushing down on the front fender or rocking the steering wheel (with the car safely on the ground).
  3. When to See a Shop: It's highly advisable to have your Acura RLX inspected by a qualified mechanic or an Acura dealership as soon as possible. Suspension issues can impact steering, braking, and overall vehicle safety. A professional will be able to lift the car, perform a thorough visual inspection, and use specialized tools to check for play in various suspension components. They can accurately diagnose the source of the clunking and recommend the necessary repairs, which could range from replacing inexpensive end links to more involved control arm or strut replacements.
