Vehicle: 2019 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid Advance

My 2019 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid Advance recently started making a noticeable grinding noise when I apply the brakes, especially at lower speeds. It's not a squeal, but a distinct grinding sound that feels a bit rough through the pedal.

To make matters worse, a 'Brake System Malfunction' warning light has now appeared on my dashboard. I'm concerned about driving it, especially with it being a hybrid and having regenerative braking.

Has anyone experienced this specific issue with their RLX Sport Hybrid? Could it be related to the regenerative braking system, or just standard brake wear?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A grinding noise during braking coupled with a 'Brake System Malfunction' warning on your 2019 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid Advance is a serious issue that requires immediate attention due to safety concerns.

Potential Causes:

  1. Worn Brake Pads/Rotors: The most common cause of grinding is severely worn brake pads, where the metal backing plate is contacting the rotor. This can quickly damage the rotors. Even with regenerative braking, the friction brakes are still heavily used, especially for harder stops or at very low speeds.
  2. Brake Caliper Issues: A seized or sticking brake caliper can cause a pad to constantly drag against the rotor, leading to premature wear, grinding, and potentially overheating.
  3. Regenerative Braking System Fault: In a Sport Hybrid, the regenerative braking system works in conjunction with the traditional friction brakes. A fault in the electronic control of the regenerative system or its components could cause improper brake application or a warning light. However, grinding is typically a mechanical friction brake issue.
  4. ABS/VSA System Malfunction: The 'Brake System Malfunction' light often indicates an issue with the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) or Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system. This could be a faulty wheel speed sensor, ABS module, or a pressure sensor within the braking system.
  5. Master Cylinder or Brake Booster: Less common, but issues with these primary braking components can also lead to warning lights and unusual pedal feel.

Common OBD Codes: If an advanced scanner is used, you might find C-codes (Chassis codes) related to the brake system, such as C1500 (Generic Brake System Fault), or specific codes for wheel speed sensors (e.g., C1010, C1020), ABS pump motor, or pressure sensors.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Do not delay. A grinding noise indicates a severe issue with your friction brakes, and the warning light means a critical safety system is compromised. Driving with compromised brakes is extremely dangerous.
  • Have your RLX towed or driven cautiously directly to an Acura dealership or a trusted repair shop. They will need to inspect the brake pads, rotors, calipers, and perform a diagnostic scan to identify any fault codes within the ABS/VSA system and the hybrid braking control module. Addressing this quickly is paramount for your safety and to prevent more extensive damage.
