Vehicle: 2017 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some really rough and jerky shifts in my 2017 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid, especially when coming to a stop or accelerating from low speeds. It feels like the transmission is confused, sometimes lurching forward or hesitating before engaging.

It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently now. I'm worried it might be a serious transmission issue. Has anyone else with a similar model year RLX Sport Hybrid encountered this problem? What was the fix?

Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealership.

Rough or jerky shifts in your 2017 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid can be concerning, as the sophisticated 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) should operate smoothly. This issue often points to a few potential causes:

  1. Transmission Fluid: Low or contaminated transmission fluid can significantly impact shift quality. The DCT requires specific fluid, and an incorrect type or level can cause problems. Check your owner's manual for the correct fluid specification and maintenance schedule.
  2. Software Glitch: The transmission control module (TCM) relies on complex software. Sometimes, a simple software update or reset can resolve erratic shifting behavior. Dealerships have the tools to check for and apply these updates.
  3. Clutch Pack Wear: While less common on newer vehicles, excessive wear on the clutch packs within the DCT can lead to jerky engagement. This is a more significant repair.
  4. Hybrid System Integration: Given it's a Sport Hybrid, the interaction between the electric motors and the DCT is crucial. Issues with the hybrid system's control unit or battery management could indirectly affect transmission performance.

Diagnostics: A professional scan tool might reveal specific trouble codes related to the transmission (e.g., P0700 series codes for transmission control system malfunction). However, sometimes these issues don't immediately trigger a CEL.

When to see a shop: It's highly recommended to have your Acura RLX inspected by an authorized Acura dealership or a reputable independent shop specializing in Acura/Honda vehicles as soon as possible. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe and costly damage to the transmission or hybrid system. Describe the symptoms precisely, including when they occur (e.g., cold start, specific gears, acceleration/deceleration).
