Vehicle: 2016 Acura RLX P-AWS

Hi all, I've got a 2016 Acura RLX P-AWS with the 3.5L V6, and lately, the transmission has been acting up. It feels like it's jerking pretty hard, especially when shifting at lower speeds or when downshifting as I come to a stop. It's not smooth at all, and sometimes there's a noticeable delay before it engages a gear.

I've read about some transmission issues in other Acura models, but I'm wondering if anyone with an RLX has experienced this. Could it be a fluid issue, or something more serious? The car has about 75,000 miles on it.

Any thoughts on what might be going on or what I should check? Thanks for your help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting and jerking in your 2016 Acura RLX P-AWS can be a concerning issue, and it's something that should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage. The RLX P-AWS uses a conventional 6-speed automatic transmission, which can experience wear and tear over time.

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): A professional scan tool can reveal specific transmission-related codes. Look for codes such as:

    • P0700: Transmission Control System Malfunction (a general code indicating a transmission issue).
    • P0731/P0732/etc.: Incorrect Gear Ratio for specific gears.
    • P0741: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off.
    • P0776: Pressure Control Solenoid 'B' Performance/Stuck Off.
  2. Common Causes:

    • Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: This is often the simplest cause. Old, dirty, or low transmission fluid can lead to poor lubrication and hydraulic pressure, causing harsh shifts. Acura recommends specific fluid (DW-1) and service intervals.
    • Worn Transmission Solenoids: Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage gears. If they become sticky or fail, shifting can become erratic.
    • Torque Converter Issues: A failing torque converter can cause shuddering, especially during acceleration or when the transmission is trying to lock up.
    • Transmission Control Module (TCM) Software: Sometimes, a software update for the TCM can resolve shifting anomalies.
    • Internal Transmission Wear: In some cases, clutch packs or other internal components may be worn, requiring more extensive repair.
  3. When to See a Shop: It's highly recommended to have your RLX inspected by an Acura dealership or a reputable transmission specialist. They can perform a thorough diagnostic, including checking fluid levels and condition, scanning for codes, and potentially performing a test drive to pinpoint the exact issue. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe and costly transmission damage. If it's a fluid issue, a simple drain and fill might help, but if it's solenoid or internal wear, professional repair will be necessary.
