Vehicle: 2016 Acura TLX 2.4L Tech

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2016 Acura TLX with the 2.4L engine and the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), not the 9-speed, my apologies for the typo in the title. Lately, I've noticed some really harsh shifts, especially when going from 1st to 2nd gear, and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. It feels like it's clunking into gear, and there's a noticeable hesitation before it engages.

This isn't just a minor bump; it's quite jarring and makes the car feel less refined than it should. I've had the car for about three years now, and while it's always been a bit 'sporty' in its shifts, this feels different and worse. It's got about 70,000 miles on it.

Is this a known issue with the early TLX models and their DCTs? Or could this be a sign of a bigger problem developing? I'm wondering if a transmission fluid change might help, or if there's a software update I should be looking into. Any advice from other owners would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealer.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common concern with the early 8-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) in the 2015-2017 Acura TLX 2.4L models. While the 9-speed automatic in the V6 models received more widespread complaints, the DCT also had its share of refinement issues, particularly with harsh or delayed shifts.

Here's what you should consider:

  1. Software Updates (TSBs): Acura released several Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for the 8-speed DCT to address shifting characteristics. These updates aim to refine the transmission's logic and improve shift quality. It's highly recommended to check with your Acura dealer if your vehicle has received all applicable software updates. This is often the first and most effective step.
  2. Transmission Fluid Service: While the DCT fluid is designed for long intervals, harsh shifting can sometimes be mitigated by a fluid and filter change, especially if it hasn't been done recently. Ensure genuine Acura DW-1 fluid is used, as improper fluid can exacerbate issues. This is a maintenance item that can improve longevity and performance.
  3. Driving Style Adaptation: The DCT is an adaptive transmission. Sometimes, a 'transmission reset' procedure (which can often be done by the dealer or sometimes by disconnecting the battery for a short period) followed by a period of varied, smooth driving can help the transmission re-learn your driving style and improve shift points.
  4. Clutch Pack Wear: In some cases, especially with higher mileage, the clutch packs within the DCT can start to show wear, leading to rough engagement. This is a more significant repair but less common than software or fluid issues at 70,000 miles if regularly maintained.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately if you notice any new warning lights on your dashboard (e.g., 'Check Engine' or 'Transmission Malfunction').
  • As soon as possible if the harshness is worsening rapidly, or if you experience any slipping, grinding noises, or complete loss of drive.
  • Schedule an appointment with an Acura dealership to have them check for any outstanding TSBs related to the transmission and perform a diagnostic scan. They can also check the transmission fluid condition and recommend a service if needed. Mention specific symptoms and the mileage.
