Vehicle: 2017 Acura TLX V6 Advance

Hello Acura community,

I'm having some serious transmission problems with my 2017 Acura TLX V6 with the 9-speed automatic. While driving, the 'D' light on the dash started blinking, and the car went into what felt like limp mode, refusing to shift properly. I pulled over, turned the car off and on, and it seemed to reset, but the issue came back a few days later.

I don't have a specific OBD-II code yet, as my basic scanner didn't pick up anything, but I know transmission issues often have their own set of codes. Has anyone experienced this with their 9-speed TLX? I'm worried about a costly transmission replacement.

Could this be related to transmission fluid, or perhaps a sensor issue? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The blinking 'D' light and limp mode on your 2017 Acura TLX V6's 9-speed automatic transmission are clear indicators of a fault detected by the Transmission Control Module (TCM). While your basic scanner might not show a generic P-code, a more advanced scanner or a Honda/Acura specific diagnostic tool will likely reveal specific transmission fault codes (e.g., P07xx, P17xx).

Here are common causes for these symptoms in the 9-speed TLX:

  1. Transmission Fluid Level and Condition: Start by checking the transmission fluid level according to the owner's manual (usually with the engine warm and running). Low or dirty fluid can cause shifting problems. Ensure the correct Honda/Acura DW-1 or ATF-Type 3.1 fluid is used.
  2. Transmission Pressure Switches: The 9-speed ZF transmission used in the TLX is known to have issues with pressure switches failing. These switches monitor fluid pressure in different circuits and can cause erratic shifting or limp mode when faulty. Common codes associated with this are P0776, P0796, P0847, P0872, etc.
  3. Solenoid Issues: Similar to pressure switches, transmission solenoids control fluid flow and can stick or fail, leading to shifting problems. These also generate specific fault codes.
  4. Wiring or Connector Issues: A loose or corroded electrical connection to the transmission, TCM, or sensors can interrupt signals and cause errors.
  5. TCM Software Glitch: In some cases, a software update for the Transmission Control Module might resolve intermittent issues, especially if no hard part failure is found.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. Transmission issues, especially those causing limp mode, should be addressed promptly to prevent further damage. Continuing to drive with a blinking 'D' light can lead to more severe and costly repairs.
  • A professional Acura technician has the specialized diagnostic equipment (HDS - Honda Diagnostic System) to read specific transmission codes and perform detailed diagnostics that generic OBD-II scanners cannot.
  • They can accurately diagnose pressure switch failures, solenoid issues, or internal transmission problems, and perform any necessary software updates or repairs.
