Vehicle: 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Acura TLX A-Spec with about 65,000 miles on it, and I'm starting to experience some pretty annoying brake issues. For the last few weeks, I've noticed a high-pitched squeal every time I apply the brakes, especially at lower speeds. It's getting louder and more consistent.

On top of that, when I brake from highway speeds, I feel a distinct vibration through the steering wheel and sometimes the brake pedal itself. It's not constant, but it's definitely noticeable and makes me a bit nervous. I had the pads and rotors replaced about 25,000 miles ago, so I'm wondering if they could be worn out again already or if it's something else.

Has anyone else with a 2018 TLX experienced this? What was the fix? Should I be worried about something more serious?

Hi Sarah,

It sounds like you're dealing with a couple of common brake issues that can arise as vehicles age. The good news is these are usually diagnosable and fixable.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps:

  1. Squealing Brakes:

    • Worn Brake Pads: This is the most common cause. Brake pads have wear indicators (small metal tabs) that produce a squealing sound when the pads are low, alerting you it's time for replacement.
    • Glazed Pads/Rotors: If the pads or rotors get excessively hot, their surfaces can harden or 'glaze,' leading to squealing.
    • Contamination: Dirt, dust, or even oil/grease on the brake components can cause noise.
    • Improper Installation: If the last brake job didn't include proper lubrication of caliper pins or shims, noise can occur.
  2. Steering Wheel Vibration When Braking:

    • Warped Brake Rotors: This is the most likely culprit. Rotors can become warped due to uneven heat distribution, causing the brake pads to grab inconsistently, leading to vibration. Even relatively new rotors can warp if subjected to extreme heat cycles (e.g., heavy braking followed by driving through puddles).
    • Worn Suspension Components: While less common for braking-specific vibration, worn tie rod ends, control arm bushings, or wheel bearings can exacerbate vibrations.
    • Tire Imbalance/Runout: If your tires are out of balance or have excessive runout, it can sometimes be felt more prominently during braking.

When to See a Shop:

YouGiven the combination of squealing and vibration, it's highly recommended to have your 2018 Acura TLX inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible. While squealing can sometimes be minor, vibration during braking indicates a more significant issue that affects braking performance and safety. A shop will be able to:

  • Inspect brake pad thickness and rotor condition (checking for runout/warping).
  • Check caliper operation and guide pins.
  • Examine suspension components for any excessive play.
  • Diagnose the exact cause and recommend appropriate repairs, which may include replacing pads and rotors, or resurfacing rotors if they are within specification.
