Vehicle: 2018 Acura TLX V6 Advance

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing some really frustrating transmission issues with my 2018 Acura TLX V6 Advance. It's got about 65,000 miles on it, and lately, the 9-speed automatic transmission has been acting up. I'm noticing significant hesitation, especially when accelerating from a stop or at low speeds, and the shifts, particularly between 2nd and 3rd gear, feel very rough and clunky.

It's not consistent, but it's happening more frequently now. Sometimes it feels like the car is searching for the right gear, and there's a noticeable delay before it engages. I've tried driving in different modes (Normal, Sport), but the problem persists. I'm worried about long-term reliability.

Has anyone else with a 2016-2020 TLX V6 experienced similar problems with their 9-speed transmission? What did your dealership say, or what solutions did you find? I'm trying to gather some info before I take it in.

It sounds like you're describing a common concern with the ZF 9-speed automatic transmission (9HP) found in many Acura models, including your 2018 TLX V6. These transmissions have been known to exhibit symptoms like hesitation, rough shifts, and clunking, particularly at lower gears or during specific driving conditions. While not always indicative of a major failure, these issues can certainly be frustrating and impact the driving experience.

Here's what you should consider and how to proceed:

  1. Check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and Software Updates:

    • Acura has released several TSBs related to the ZF 9-speed transmission, often addressing shift quality and hesitation through software recalibrations. These updates aim to refine the transmission's logic and improve its performance. Your dealership can check if your specific VIN has any outstanding TSBs or recommended software updates. This is often the first and most effective step.
  2. Transmission Fluid Inspection:

    • While less common for these specific symptoms, ensuring the transmission fluid is at the correct level and in good condition is crucial. Low or degraded fluid can contribute to poor shift quality. A professional should check the fluid level and condition, as this transmission requires a specific fluid type and a precise filling procedure.
  3. Professional Diagnosis at an Acura Dealership:

    • Given the complexity of modern transmissions, a visit to an authorized Acura dealership is highly recommended. They have specialized diagnostic tools that can read transmission-specific codes (even if your check engine light isn't on) and perform advanced diagnostics. They can also perform a 'relearn' procedure for the transmission, which can sometimes resolve minor shift anomalies.

Potential Causes:

  • Software Calibration: The most frequent culprit is often the transmission control module (TCM) software, which dictates shift points and clutch engagement. Updates can significantly improve behavior.
  • Valve Body Issues: Less common, but a faulty valve body (which directs fluid pressure to engage clutches) can cause inconsistent shifting.
  • Sensor Malfunctions: Speed sensors or other transmission sensors can sometimes provide incorrect data, leading to erratic shifts.

If your vehicle is still under an extended warranty, be sure to mention this to the service advisor. Document your symptoms clearly and consistently. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent potential long-term wear and tear on transmission components.
