Vehicle: 2018 Acura TLX V6 A-Spec

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Acura TLX V6 A-Spec with about 65,000 miles, and lately, the 9-speed automatic transmission has been acting up. I'm experiencing really rough shifts, especially when going from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes 3rd to 4th gear. It feels like it's clunking into gear, and there's a noticeable hesitation before it engages.

It's most apparent when the car is cold, but even after warming up, it's not as smooth as it used to be. I've heard some talk about these transmissions having issues. Has anyone else with a similar model year TLX experienced this? What was your fix?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting and hesitation in the 2018 Acura TLX's 9-speed transmission are common concerns. Here's what typically causes these issues and what steps you can take:

  1. Software Updates: The most frequent cause is outdated transmission control module (TCM) software. Acura has released several updates to improve shift quality and address these specific complaints. This is usually the first thing a dealership will check and update.
  2. Transmission Fluid Condition: While less common at 65,000 miles if regularly serviced, old or low transmission fluid can contribute to poor shifting. The 9-speed requires specific fluid (ZF9HP ATF). A fluid drain and fill (not a flush) might help, but ensure it's done correctly.
  3. Solenoid Issues: Internal transmission solenoids can sometimes stick or fail, leading to inconsistent fluid pressure and rough shifts. This might trigger a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) or specific gear ratio error codes.
  4. Clutch Pack Wear: In more severe cases, internal clutch packs could be wearing prematurely, though this is less common without higher mileage or aggressive driving.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately if you experience a check engine light, transmission warning light, or if the car enters 'limp mode.'
  • If a software update and fluid service don't resolve the issue.
  • If you hear grinding noises or experience complete loss of a gear.

It's highly recommended to visit an Acura dealership first, as they have the specific diagnostic tools and software to properly diagnose and update the transmission. Be prepared to describe the exact conditions under which the issue occurs (cold, hot, specific gears).
